EarthLink or Outlook

To EL users - a couple of months ago, I stopped receiving e-mail notifications from PRIME that (a) a new PM is waiting for me and (b) a thread that I had previously posted to received a new post since my last viewing. I noticed a few other people posted similar experience; however, they did not indicate who their ISP is. I double-checked the notification parameters in my PRIME profile, and everything was-is set to send me e-mails, but I do not receive any. Oh well, life goes on.

When I used to get e-mail notifications from PRIME, after booting up to EL's homepage, I would click on the "mail" icon to go to Outlook Express to read the e-mail. As mentioned, I have had MAYBE five notification e-mails from PRIME in the past two months or so.

Then something showed up today on EL's homepage......that I have one e-mail at their Web Mail link. Hmmm, that's interesting. So I log in and all the typical PRIME notification e-mails are in there!!!!! Going back from January!!!!! One e-mail my ass, more like hundreds!!!!!

Is this an EarthLink twist or an Outlook twist?????

FWIW, I use Earthlink as my ISP. I don't use their front end, though. I use IE6 as my browser and Outlook (NOT Outlook Express) as my e-mail software. I have had no problems receiving e-mail notifications of PM or new posts.

Well, I use Outlook and Cox cable as my ISP. I'm still not receiving emails for PMs and new posts on my subscribed threads. Until I start receiving emails, I've found a way around the previously posted thread issue. I go to the 'quick links' and then look at the 'subscribed threads'. All new threads that have new posts will be in bold black. Or I can click 'new posts' and look for the threads with the 'check marks' :frown:

Andy the problem has to be either on earthlink's end or on your end. My server gives up trying to deliver e-mails after either 1 or 2 weeks, I forget which. After that it considers the message undeliverable and deletes it from the queue.

Therefore if you just got a bunch of messages going back to the beginning of this year, they were successfully delivered from my server to earthlink's server and went into limbo after that point. I do not know what the problem could be, hopefully someone else will have some ideas.

Andy, I don’t use EarthLink, but my guess would be the problem is on EarthLink’s end, possibly in their POP3 interface. This is the interface that Outlook would use to pull emails from EarthLink’s mail server to your computer. I’m not sure if you have some sort of spam filter on Outlook Express; Assume you don’t... I suspect the problem’s on EarthLink’s end because, as far as I know, Outlook Express will pull all messages down and does not have the ability to only retrieve certain ones. Outlook Express, like most mail clients, does have the option leave messages on the server. However, even if this option was enabled, you would still see all the messages from your mail server.

That said, I don’t have a good explanation for why there are messages on EarthLink’s webmail interface that are not available through the POP3 interface (Outlook Express). Perhaps EarthLink filters messages (for what it thinks is spam) before it makes them available to the POP3 mail server.

One thing that you can do to help pin-point the source of the issue would be to access your email from another email client. The easiest one that pops into mind is Yahoo! Mail. If you have a Yahoo! Mail account, you can configure it to retrieve messages from a POP3 server. To do this, login to your Yahoo! Mail, click Mail Options, click Mail Accounts, click Add. Enter a name (like EarthLink Mail Test), click Continue, enter your mail server, username, and password (this is the same information that is setup in Outlook Express), finally click Setup Mail Server.

You can click the account you just setup under the Check Other Mail section. If you see the PM notifications that were missing in Outlook Express, that means an Outlook Express problem. If you don’t see the PM notifications, that means it’s an issue on Earthlink’s end. By the way, by default, mail will not be delete from your mail server, so Outlook Express should function as it always has even if you pull messages down through Yahoo! Mail.

Hope this helps.

Again, I use Earthlink (and yes, I have Microsoft Outlook retrieving e-mail from Earthlink's POP3 mail server). I do not have any problems receiving e-mail notifications from NSXprime. So whatever Andy's problem is, it must be something inherent in how his computer and e-mail is configured different from mine, rather than anything that affects all Earthlink users.

Except one day I am receiving e-mails from PRIME and the next day, nothing. In between I changed nothing in my PRIME profile nor my Earthlink settings nor my Ootlook Express rules.

That’s logical; however, Earthlink is a big ISP that provides serveral different types of services (dial-up, DSL, and cable). Because of this, it’s possible that Andy’s pulling email from a different Earthlink server than you. It’s not uncommon since the two of you are in different areas of the country. Also, I could be wrong, but I think some of these services are through a regional partner. For example, here in Austin, I know EarthLink cable is provided by Time Warner’s RoadRunner. In this case, it’s quite likely that the mail server would be configured differently since 1) a company other than EarthLink runs the server and 2) there is not centrallized server - there is one (or more) servers per service region.

I think the best way to rule-out the email client (Outlook Express) as the source of the problem is to try getting your email from another client, like I described above. If my instructions were not clear, or Yahoo! is not an option, let me know and I’ll help you setup another email client.

I am like Ken, earthlink is my pop3 but outlook is my software,I have no problems with prime notification.Andy reboot your router!

More Confusion

Well well well.....this just keeps on getting better.

Recall how I was able to see lots-lots of "old" PRIME notification e-mails from EarthLink's frontpage webmail? For a fact, over the last few daysI have seen people post to threads after I have. Today, not a single e-mail at that webmail location, nor in mt direct inbox.

Right now, is the first time in several days that I am surfing PRIME from home. (I cannot view home e-mails from work.) On December 27th I got an e-mail notification from PRIME about the thread titled "Comptech Super Charger & RM Racing Exhaust" from when I posted to that thread on December 10th.

Despite me posting a thread and others subsequently posting to the same thread over the past three days, the above is the only e-mail notification I got from PRIME. Just as I thought that getting no e-mail notifications is the way it's gonna be, I randomly receive the above one.

Thank you to all that have provided input, suggestions and assistance. For me, this is not worth pursuing anymore. I am a true internet dipshit.

I'm off to do two things. A - play with my driver (I'll leave that to your imagination) and over the weekend go looking at Boxers (which I will also leave to your imagination).

Everyone have a safe weekend and stay warm. I'm wearing shorts today.

Re: More Confusion

I'm also still having the exact same problems that Andy is having. But I've also chalked it up to that I'm an internet moron. I'm on Prime enough anyway that I'll usually see replies to posts before I would get a notification anyway. Ok, now I'm an internet moron and I need to get a life outside of Prime. It's so addicting though!
