electric supercharger

I'm ignorant on these matters, so please excuse my question. I have never heard of an electric supercharger, but I wonder why not? It seems that such a device might not be as parasitic as a crankshaft driven supercharger. Is there such a device? If so, why are not these more widespread? If not, why not?

I have actually seen such a device on a LS 3000GT a year or two ago. If I remember correctly it pushed extremely low boost (2-3psi?) and was relatively expensive. I forget the name of the company but apparently their specialty is making electric superchargers for vehicles that don't have much of an aftermarket.

Yup, I added this to my 6lb CTSC and I got at least 1000 more horses.
