If you do decide to go for the extended warranty. look very carefully at the fine print and make sure it covers EVERYTHING and that anything you may think of being covered is not excluded. A friend of mine bought one for his car (not an NSX) later to find out that a costly part was not covered since it was not listed as a part covered in the extended warranty.
Another aspect to consider is to make sure that the entire cost of the repair is covered meaning you are not out of pocket for anything. In my case, I had an extended warranty for my '86 Integra which I only bought since it was my first car with A/C and knew it would be costly to repair should it fail. My standard warranty expired and later my fuel pump died. The car was towed to an Acura dealer and repaired ($320). I had to pay for the full amount upfront and then file a claim with the warranty company. I only got $210 back. I asked why and they explained to me that they go by what is called the "book rate" meaning that only so much labor time is allowed for a certain repair. Looking at the repair order, I was charged three hours labor for the fuel pump replacement whereas their book rate showed that only an hour was necessary to complete the repair. I complained to the dealer why they charged so much in labor. They responded that it was appropriate since I was getting genuine parts and certified Acura techs working on my car. I was lead to believe the warranty covered the entire cost of the repair. I wanted to cancel the warranty but at that time, the prorated amount I would be due was less than $80 with a year left. I just let it expire having not to use it anymore.
BTW, that was the only part that failed on my Integra (60K miles). I owned the car for 10 years and 151K miles with no other problems. An A/C valve broke letting all the freon escape in a big white cloud but it was replaced and the A/C recharged for under $100.
On the other hand, my friend owned a green '94 NSX and had his automatic transmission fail a couple years ago. The torque converter went south and was presented an $8,000 bill for replacement. Yikes! He recalled having an extended warranty and upon checking it, there was ONE WEEK of coverage left before it expired!!!! Needless to say, it was completely covered. What luck!
An extended warranty is nice to have but when you consider Honda's excellent reliability, it's really hard to decide whether to purchase such a warranty or not.
