Interesting video I stumbled upon in Youtube regarding octane in fuel with actual dyno test results.

cool videos... but nothing really surprising here :)

engines are designed to use a particular octane fuel. using higher than that octane rating is not going to do any good. using less than the recommended rating is going to kill power.
 
What left me wondering though about the fuel octane levels is..... They tested a turbocharged tuner and performance car and got gains. Now what about cars like our nsx that is performance tuned but not boosted?

hmmm... i am not sure if i would interpret it as the WRX getting gains with the higher octane. rather... i imagine that the WRX REQUIRES higher octane (just like the NSX requires it)... and that using the lower octane simply meant that it was losing power.
 
i know for a fact that mid grade makes a difference in the nsx.
I use to run it around town and when I filled up with premium, WOW!

My understanding is that the WRX's ECU has the ability to advance as well as retard timing for as long as the ECU deems it safe.

The NSX, on the other hand, can only retard timing when it senses trouble. It is unable to advance timing to take advantage of higher octane fuels and therefore using anything beyond that which is recommended/required will result in little to no benefit.
 
Hmmm, wish ours could auto advance/retard. That would be cool.

I'm not down with the whole advanced by "custom/aftermarket" ecu chip.....stuff.
