First gear and Reverse weirdness

Hi all,

I've been having some weird experiences with going into first and reverse gears while the car is moving slowly (like less than 5 mph).

Getting into first, I rev match a bit and then put it slowly. When I do that, I feel some vibration and resistence in the shift lever as if the gears are grinding. Eventually, it goes in. On a standstill, first gear engages with not issues. Is my synchro going?

For reverse, I heard a loud clunking noise if the car is moving (in reverse) with the clutch pressed down. Sometimes it takes me a few tries to get into reverse. Again, on a standstill, reverse engages fine and I dont heard any noises. Does reverse gear have a synchro?

Don't engage a gear too slowly. You've got to be assertive with a gear change, especially going into first while you're moving. Don't engage any gear TOO slowly; but don't jam it, either. That said, maybe it's time for a tranny fluid change. Search this forum for transmission lubricant; there are some good posts. Fresh fluid couldn't hurt.

I don't know for sure if reverse has a synchro in the NSX, but in general, it's not a good idea to engage reverse while moving, forward or backward. I always engage first before I engage reverse as it gets the input shaft spinning such that it makes it easier to engage reverse. I've done this in every car I've ever had for the last 35 years and it's always worked.

John:

You didn't tell us if you have a stock clutch. It sounds like the clutch is not fully disengaging.

Sometimes with agressive driving the double disk clutch will adjust it's self up too much. If you are a DIY you can re-initialize the clutch and see if that solves the problem.
