From time to time I get random hang ups on my cell phone and I want to lookup who is calling me in some sort of online directory. Also, I received some prank phone calls from a kid that would call one a week for a month or so and want to track down the name. The problem is that with cell phones, there is no directory that is free and you have pay to see the info. Is there a free site out there that you can see whose name is attached to each number? Thanks.

AOL has a reverse lookup.

I recently used this feature. I have been receiving a taped bimonthly calls from some resident in Michigan claiming that my warranty on the car has expired though they never mentioned which car, what their company name was ......... and my car warranties have expired a few years ago!

AT&T would do absolutely nothing to tracking or blocking calls from such numbers. They asked that I report it to the local police. The local police said this can't be deemed as a crime so even if I filed a report, they wouldn't be able to do anything. They asked to call the number and hopefully tell them to drop me from their list; the number is no longer in business even though the cal came only 24 hours earlier. And my cell has been blocked from marketing calls. YMMV.

Hrant, it's EXTREMELY easy to do caller ID spoofing. They could be calling from an entirely different number than that one that shows up on your caller ID. I can program my PBX to make my phone's CID appear as any number I want in about 30 seconds. That might explain why when you call it, it's out of service.

Agreed. The question remains though, how can one stop such repeated unwanted harassing annoyance short of changing one's number?

The only way I can think of is some sort of screening that involves the calling party to 'press 1' or dial a code or some such. If you were technical, you could even install your own PBX for free (Asterisk/Trixbox/PBX in a Flash, etc) and that would allow you to 'white list' certain numbers so they come through, and force others to press a number. You can black list numbers as well and disconnect them, put them on hold with annoying music forever, forward their call to Dominoes Pizza, etc.

I almost forgot all about this as the calls have stopped coming in. It was from two numbers that I wanted to see who it belonged to. A 10-13 year old kid had called the wrong number (my number) and thought it would be funny to keep calling the number a couple times a week to try and mess with me. I guess I could have just called it myself to speak with the parents, but wanted to see if I could find out who it was first.
