Funny CL ad:

The ad didn't last long, it was pulled about an hour after the guy posted it. I figured this would happen so I made a copy in word. Here's the copy:

** FREE WIFE ** Slightly used 1975 model Has many miles, but starts every morning between 9 and 11am. Not much of a work horse, just good for going to the store, close friends etc...

Things needing attention...

Definatly needs muffler, as it is currently VERY LOUD.

The intake valve is stuck in the open position.

Rear end needs major overhaul. There is supposed to be a crack there, but it has grown monstrously large.

Needs re-wiring—Many wires are currently crossed, and not firing on all cylnders

There are several little dings in the body, which have been covered up with too much paint in a failed effort at camouflaging them.

Needs re-upholstering—the headliner has turned a dingy gray and the carpet has grown out of control.

In desperate need of front-end work--chest is too close to the ground, and knees are too far apart.

May or may not pass emissions test, as it currently produces foul clouds of malodorous gases on a regular basis maybe the cat converters are out?

Heater works great. Hot air is never in short supply..

Up for trade for a 1984 or newer model.

Wow, that's pretty bad for a 1975 model. I mean, grey hair and chest close to the ground at 33 years old? That's some rough mileage.

he forgot to post the actual mileage, # of owners and service history . wonder if the timing belt/chain service has been done ?

Also important is the consumption pattern on the consumables - lube, coolant, pads and shoes.

:D

Must have bought one of those Detroit jobs. Do you remember what they were making there in 1975? They sure didn't age well.

I vaguely remember those days... reeling from the fuel shortages of the early 70s, everything turned up wussied-up by the mid-70s. Note: this was not necessarily first-hand (!).

excerpt from a Hot Rodding magazine, circa 1976.

"... I confess that '75 was a complete blur. Detroit had taken away the crank and had slipped us Valium instead. After that was gone, we got placebos, and our musclecars became castratos overnight. All the fun rolled into damp grayness, like a dead mackerel, as most of the world fooled itself with disco. In those days Detroit seemed just as distracted by style as the masses, but better to dance on the sidelines than not at all."

Corvette review, 1975 - http://www.web-cars.com/corvette/1975.php

"The horsepower rating of the standard Corvette engine was 165 hp. This isn't much more than the 155 hp of the 1954 Corvette - but that was a six cylinder motor! Smog regulations were to blame and the future looked very bleak."

Wimpy motors, the beginning of the FWD takeover, and uninspired styling... some of the darker days for Detroit
