Games: Brain Changes When Viewing Violent Media

Sounds dubious to me. It mentions that the main people to be affected by it were people with a predisposition toward aggressive behavior.

I mean, if I put all of the 'Prime members in a room and showed them some videos of some wicked car stunts, I bet you'd see a bunch of brain activity then, too.

Just like if you put a bunch of pubescent boys in front of a nudie flick... I'm sure they'd register more brain activity than any other audience

I would think that based on the preliminary data, it's just a difference in what people find entertaining and why (being able to relate to the subject matter vs being fascinated by the subject matter etc).

For example, I love a good action flick. If there's figting in it, then great. But the REASON for the fighting is what makes the fight cool. Nothing is more lame than an action movie that "makes excuses" for characters to get into fights (think B movies). But in a movie like The Patriot, the violence is motivated by compelling drama. Some folks don't care about the drama, being satisfied only by the depiction of the violence itself (most likely, these are the people who registered the bigger responses in the experiment).

Call me a conspiracy theorist, but it seems to me that the experiment poses too narrow of a question to be real science. It rather seems like someone is trying to "prove" that violence in the media is a bad influence. The question being "Does depicted violence have an effect on viewers' behavior?" Rather than something more like "What effect, if any, does depicted behavior have on the behavior of viewers?"

i absolutely guarantee you that you'd see a difference when showing somebody a violent movie or showing them a faces of death movie.

98% of people know the difference between fake and real, and people need to stop thinking that the fake stuff even does anything to people who aren't predisposed to crazy.

Wonder what the chart looks like while watching porn?

You know those scientists did the experiment, they just won't release the data because people might think they are perverts.

oh man +10000. I remember those faces of death tapes. I rented them a few times. The monkey in the table that spun and had his head bashed in for no reason upset me the most and maybe the face being pealed back.

Back in the day that was really the only to get a look at that kind of stuff. You know I remember thinking while looking at the VCR tapes on the shelf at rent a flick, man the covers/boxes on those faces of death tapes are worn right out, they must be popular rentals. Fact is more people than will admit it like to watch that crap.

Now up t that point I had seen Rambo kill 50 people and dirty harry but I knew the difference between that and someone setting themselves on fire in the faces of death series. Now though the faces of death type videos are everywhere, on the internet. I wonder if there has been a desensitizing of todays youth to death. Look at the way a teenager view that stuff on the web. Their expressions don't really change much.

i don't think people "like" to watch that stuff, but it's just interesting... something we're never exposed to here in america.

i know a lot of people on the internet would write stupid crap on a comment on youtube or break or something just to get a rise out of people, but i still honestly think that they are affected by it.

i mean, cmon.... if you're not a psycho, even if you see that kind of stuff everyday, how could you not be disturbed by watching a 13-year old get dismembered (hands and feet cut off with a knife), and being forced to walk in his stubs to a truck full of other people, get loaded on, and carried off to who-knows-where. it's just messed up.

all i know is, if you watch one of those movies and are seeing that type of thing straight for 2 hours.... the last thing you want to do is go out and kill somebody.... you want to stay in your house and pray that you don't die painfully and start thinking weird thoughts about death.

to tell you the truth, though..... a lot of people in our "dumbed-down", overly protected society could use a little wake-up call.

but it is quite amazing how many insane people there really are. :frown:

That's what the tapes did for me...they made me be more careful with my life.

I watched a report this morning on the BTK killer. There was some new details I hadn't seen before. That guy was truly NUTS!
