Grading doctors?

I need to find a new GI doctor. I know which ones are on my list for insurance, but don't know who to choose. Is there a site that you can find "grades" for doctors or see any complaints or compliments about them?

I've seen some sites like the one you're asking about. The problem with them is that they usually measure outcomes. However, if a heart sugeon for example accepts extremely complex cases, he/she probably won't have the highest positive outcomes. On the other hand, if another one doesn't do complex cases, they will have better outcomes, but may not be the best doctor. JMO. Good luck.

I see what you're saying. I'm not really looking for anything too deep I guess. I mostly want to find out about bedside manner.

My last doctor was very good, but did not talk at all and left me wondering all the time. Unless I asked a question, he was silent. When he was answering a question, it was very quick and not thorough enough for me to usually understand.

Ask close friends or family for referral. Or, you can even go straight to the hospital and ask the RNs who they think is the best GI doctor on staff. Lastly, you can check with the medical state board.

Your state should have a Medical Board that licenses doctors and they might be able to tell you if there is an issue - though they will not share with you any comparative statistics. Here in CA there was a huge issue with such Boards not releasing information. The last fiasco was with the Board of Chiropractors and you know our Gov had a few friends that he appointed to that Board ...... then the EMS Board.

Unlike the BBB, if a complaint is still pending, the Medical Board would not disclose it; there were also concerns at one time they were not disclosing if the physician was facing disciplinary action for alcohol abuse .........

As others suggested, your best reference is referrals.

The people in the hospital know who the good docs are.

My advice would be to take a look at the list of providers. Pick a hospital where more than one of those possible providers practices. Go to that hospital and do a little polite snooping around. Talk with nurses-quietly and preferably away from groups. Say things like "Both Dr. X and Y work here, I can't decide which to go see, could you tell me a little about each?" If you catch them at the right time (i.e. not busy), they'll be very informative and as polite as you are. Keep in mind that the average nurse is not likely to say anything bad. If there is something bad, you may want to take it with a grain of salt...maybe the nurse and that doc had a disagreement. Finally, ask "who would YOU go to see?" Even the nicest nurse who doesn't wish to cause professional waves will have an immediate answer. If you trust that advice, give that doc a try. You can always change.

One MD's 2 cents.

You could always get another opinion.

Here's a good indicator that no one else is going to mention. If you see a framed picture with the phrase "Voted Best by...." walk out of the office. I get mailers all the time for these stupid a$$ marketing gimmicks. If a doctor has to buy a plaque for $150 to try and prove they are good at something, who are they fooling. I hope that my patients appreciate the efforts that I take on improving my skills by being a member of study clubs and organizations that strive for professional and personal growth. If all else fails, always go by what your gut sense tells you. This is the same as bying CF parts for your NSX; Would you rather buy from an established brick and mortar store like S.O.S, or take a risk and buy something cheaper from Lithuania?

Good luck.

LOL! That's my problem. My gut isn't working right in the first place.(Crohn's)

Thanks for the advice everyone. I only have 2 clinics and about 12 dr's to choose from, so I should be ok.

There should be a chrohns support group in your area ask some of the other patients with your diagnosis who they like.
