Guess I am kind of a new NSX owner!

Ray,
Any progression on getting this car back on the road?
This thread has kinda died and I am just wondering if it is still in Edmonton, or if you have moved it to Vancouver?

I would certainly like to see this car before it leaves for the coast. Call me up when you are in town.

Warren.

Hey Warren! Thanks for all your replies/PM and advice!

I want you to know that I totally appreciate it, because as a fellow NSX owner, I will admit I know next to nothing as what needs to be fixed, but your NSX-History email that you sent me and all the info on this site will be of great value! I will definitely give you a call/email before I ship the car out, as it is still in Edmonton.

We plan to ship it for sure before the end of this year, preferably AT LEAST during the end of summer. The reason for the delay is that there is NO WAY I am parking this car outside, and our garage here in Vancouver is, how should I say, needs some "Spring Cleaning." We are currently in the process right now of getting rid of alot of junk in our garage, and once it is done, we will ship it out.

I have done some preliminary research, and I am leaning towards these guys, as I dont want to drive it from Edmonton to Vancouver:

www.automoves.ca , and they also have an exotics section.

If anyone has any experience shipping in Canada from province to province, any advice would be appreciated!

My father has used a company called "Allied Systems" in Edmonton before when shipping the MGB GT, as I still have an old receipt, but I remember he complained about them, as they cracked the front lip a little bit when they shipped it from Edmonton to Vancouver.

Thus far, my plans will be once I arrive and want to fully ship it from Edmonton:

1. Get it towed and go through Warrens' .pdf and "cross-reference" if that is the correct term, with West End Acura and make sure all the recall's and whatever needs to be fixed, get done %100.

On a side note, I discussed it with my mother, and she remembers that my father bought the NSX near West Edmonton Mall, so I am guessing it IS FROM West End Acura, so they may have some record of the vehicle.

2. Post on here to get more friendly advice!

3. Decide which shipping company is the right one for me, and we will see what happens from there!

Edit: And also try to contact Warren if he is available, before I ship/get it inspected!

Once again, I totally appreciate all the comments and advice from everyone on this board, it seems like my dad bought VERY unique car with very PASSIONATE owners!

Yes, West End Acura is the only Acura dealership on the West end of town.
Myself and others in Edmonton can help you with your questions about the car:
"Caveman" Dan has had work done on his NSX at West End Acura. Dan's '91 is an Edmonton Car as well, and I believe purchased at West End Acura. He is good to ask about their service as he uses them. I personally have not used them, only because I haven't needed to.
"ffffanman" Trev is very knowledgeable in Edmonton as well. Another Canadian Car, '91. Trev has used Southview Acura and can tell you about thier work.
"NCC=1701D" Eddie is also very knowledgeable. Actually a past mechanic, that has a lift and tire change and balance equip in his garage.
Trev and Eddie have performed many clutch swaps on their NSXs and have a lot of NSX expertise.

As you can see the Edmonton NSX group of guys have a lot of knowledge to help you with your car.
There are others as we think there are about 18 cars in Edmonton.
I suggest you post on the "Canadian Forum" your needs as far as flat bed towing, shipping and shops to service the car in order to get your car back to Vancouver. People will help out.

I can tell you my bad experiences with flatbed towing as the truck driver knew nothing about NSXs. He could have dammaged the car if I wasn't there to stop him from hooking the winch onto the wrong place on the car.
Like I said, post on the Canadian Forum and give me a call when you are in town, and we can talk about it.

Hi, Its Trev in Edmonton.
I have your cars brother/sister, #800045!
We definitely have to get these cars together for one photo.
I would personally like to inspect your car with you.
Warren here would love to be with us and go through the car step by step with you.
Let me know when your coming to town next and we'll get together.
I'll show you things not to do with your car that I do! lol.

Incredible car!

I would guess it would be a very desireable car for a collector.

If I had the money, I personally would let it remain a garage queen, collector type car and go out and find another nice one to drive the wheel off.

Being an early car with <1k miles on it, is amazing.

It would be nice to follow up on some of the advise on following up with letting the word get out and see what people would think it would be worth.

Is Antiques Road Show coming to town anytime soon?

Sorry to hear about your dad... I recently turned 52... 54 is way too early to check out.

Keep us posted, eh. (I lived on the Idaho/Canadian boarder for approximately 9 months years ago. I loved Canada.

Fellow Red 91 owner, 002585 (mfg May 91). You appear to have a very low VIN production number (even though I'm not sure if they are different for Canada, I wouldn't think so). Yours has about 42k fewer miles than mine... You definitely have a rare jewel.

I forgot to mention that I am at 207,000 km though....

I am not sure how I missed this thread.

First off, my sincere condolences regarding your father's passing.

Second, Congratulations and Welcome to the forums. It looks as though you inherited one of North America's lowest mileage NSXs.

Third, I would recommend that you ship the car to preserve the paint condition and the mileage. I would conduct some research to find the most expereinced NSX mechanic in your area to have the timing belt service. During this service the spool valve gaskets, cam plugs, valve cover gaskets should be replaced and a valve adjustment should also be performed. As others have mentioned all fluids should be flushed and I would definately consider replacing the cooling 23 hoses as well.

Best of Luck and enjoy your NSX!

I can't believe I just noticed this thread just now.

Sorry to hear about your father.
I wouldn't put another km on that car if it was mine. I'd just let it sit in that state for another 20 years. I'm sure it would fetch some decent money.

Hi there everyone! Just a little update! Right now my mother and brother are in my Edmonton home cleaning it out (as we are planning to sell the house), throwing old clothes, toys, furniture, appliances, etc.

My brother and I decided that it would probably be best to ship the car to Vancouver and then deal with the repairs, as my brother and mother dont want to have to potentially deal with the waiting of parts for the car etc. while in Edmonton.

Sorry Warren and ffffanman, I know you reallly wanted to see the car lol., but my mom and brother have done a lot of cleaning (I myself had flown there 2x in the past 2 weeks to help), but they dont want to deal with having to wait and postpone booking their plane tickets waiting for parts!

I am going to post in the Canada forums to see which has the most reputable NSX dealer in Vancouver. I only called one place, North Shore Acura, but will call the other dealers in Vancouver.

I would like to thank you all for your advice, and any more future advice would be appreciated.

On a side note, the North Shore Acura service rep seemed shock and excited to see the car once I told him of the low kms, lol. Hope that is a good sign!

Also, any recommendations on a reputable shipping company in Canada that ships cars from Edmonton to Vancouver would be appreciated. As of note, I only noticed the auto-moves.ca and am going to call them tommorow!

Once again, thank you warren for your help and much appreciated ffffanman!

Good luck with you car.
You are smart to ship it. I was talking to a good friend that is a mechanic, and he had some good advice about getting oil back into the engine without doing damage. It involved oil flushing, disconnection of the fuel pump, and some cranking of the engine for a few seconds, once an hour for a few hours. He also mentioned the next important item was to get rid of the fuel. Fuel that old will cause problems.
Your car is a perfect time capsule. Keep it that way.
Too bad I was not able to see it before it left Edmonton.

Jet, I'm curious after reading "about you" - you love NSXs and prime but you have a 911 - what's wrong with this picture man. I mean when will you get another one? I'm not sure I understand.

Neither so I sold it and as you can see below back into my 3rd! Had to try the 911 and its no NSX.

Ray -

Fellow Edmontonian here...

I've just shipped my NSX from California to Vancouver where I'm presently storing it at my father's place. I'll be there in December and if you'd like to hook up for dinner and discuss NSX's I'd be keen. I can also relate some advice to you on its condition and having it serviced due to its lengthy storage. Mine's a 91 that has 40k miles and the Comptech Supercharger.

Anyway keep us all posted and PM me if you are keen.

Hi everyone! Just wanted to give everyone an update!

The reason I have been in a hiatus in posting is because I wanted to save up ample monies that would be needed to restore this car back to 100% drivability. I believed I have saved up enough, and now need some advice.

I will be fixing it up 100% for sure this summer, and have decided to complete all the repairs IN Edmonton, and then DRIVE it out to Vancouver, BC.

I plan on flying to Edmonton within this month of July 2011, and will contact West End Acura, as I have heard so far from all the posts in this thread that it would be the best place to take/repair it.

So far, from what I gathered, I will have to:

1. Flush out all the fluids and maybe change out the gas tank, as fuel has been sitting in there for over 15 years.

2. Will have to deal with the timing belt and snap ring issue as mine is a '91.

3. Change the tires as they are really old.

4. Fix the E-brake, as it has been up for over 15 years as well.

BUT, one positive thing I can say though is, back in March 2011, I replaced the battery, and the car started!!!!!! I did this, because I wanted to see if I could drive it on to the tow truck bed instead of manually pushing it, and it did indeed start! The sound of the engine was amazing! I was so ecstatic just to hear the engine start and I let it idle for about 1 minute. I did not rev it though, but it sure sounded like symphony to my ears!!!!! Man, am I in love with Japanese-Super-Car reliability!

I guess, my main question to you all is, what time frame would you guys expect me to be leaving the car in the shop and to be waiting for ordered replacement parts?

I know this is a tough question, as only the mechanic would be able to tell me once he/she has seen the car, but I would like to plan my trip around the time required to fix up this baby, and have it safely driven home while the roads are good!

I also would like to thank Warren again for sending me that helpful PDF! I am also paying close attention to the "barn-find" thread by gas-motors, to maybe see what I need to do as well!

Such a nice story. I wanted to send my sympathies about your dad, to young to pass.

That being said, I just wanted to congratulate you on this wonderful "find", it's going to be such a pleasure to add this dynamic and iconic car to your lifestyle.

I have yet to buy one, however, I hope to get my hands on one....one day. For now, it's all about reading about others who have found true love.

Enjoy, be safe, and as our beloved Soichiro Honda once said.....

"The value of life can be measured by how many times your soul has been deeply stirred"

Update

Hi again everyone!

Firstly, thank you all for your input and support, it's much appreciated!

I went to Westside Acura a couple of days ago and spoke with the NSX specialist and shop foreman Darren K. about the '91 NSX and he said he'd like to inspect it first before replacing anything. I got an estimate of the costs need to replace all the fluids and replace the timing belt.

Change engine oil and filter $123.98
Replace brake and clutch fluid $150.00
Replace transmission fluid $115.50
Replace coolant $200.00
Replace timing belt $1251.00 ($1125 after 10% an August discount)

The one that jumps out is the timing belt which is worth $150 from online retailers. Looking at the procedure in the service manual, it does look quite time-consuming though. Is the price justified?

They also punched in the VIN number and the seat belt buckle recall issue came up that hasn't yet been serviced. Darren said he would inspect it and replace IF necessary. He said it would take about 2-3 days to complete the work outlined above. Also he said that they frequently use Cliffstone towing and recommended their flatbed towing services. He didn't say whether they had experience with NSXs or if they use a tow hook on the front of the car (as recommended by a user in another post ) or not though.

I also popped by Southview Acura but their specialist, Aaron W. is currently away on vacation and will be back on Monday.

Thanks again for all your help!!

Please take it to Westside and pay what he wants.
Then your done.
It sounds good to me.
Timing belt is a pita.
I believe you want to have the updated waterpump installed and everything should come with the new plastic side cover.

Um... Why does an oil change cost 123.00!!!!!!

The other prices seem ok I guess

Re: Update

Um... Why does an oil change cost 123.00!!!!!!

The other prices seem ok I guess

Because its a dealership. Prices look right for a dealership IMO.

Personally, I pay the bit of extra when it is major work like this because you then have official documentation of the repair from a dealership that you can keep with the car (plus they give loaners). If you ever sell it, the "Acura paper" is worth it, IMO. Its pretty bullet proof compared to having to explain who an independent is or explain that you do everything yourself. Considering how original this car is, unless cash is a massive issue, I think the dealership route is a smart one.

In addition to the water pump, you should probably get the hoses done.
