all of the election rhetoric and market fluctuations were taking their toll on me, until this morning when i was reminded that today is the opening of stone crab season in florida.

man, does that bring back memories.

i was stationed - and then returned - to live in florida back in the 70's. although i'd grown up in california and lived on fresh caught seafood - lobster, abalone, scallops, halibut, salmon, etc - florida stone crabs may be the sweetest and best tasting seafood i've ever eaten.

and while i like it steamed and dipped in butter, washed down with a pitcher or two of beer, i think my favorite use of stone crabs is in a big serving of paella.

i hope some of you floridians are enjoying fresh stone crabs tonight!

I've never had crab before. Is this a good one to start with?

sure, though probably a bit more expensive than dungeness (sp?) / alaskan / etc.

iirc, with stone's you focus on the claws because they are HUGE.

I haven't been stone crabbing in years. Since it's pretty much still summer here, maybe I ought to dig out the mask and tongs and see what I can catch. :)

Thanks for the reminder.

I went to Trulucks recently for a meal and didn't really care for the Jonas stone crabs. They did mention that the Florida stone crab season was coming up.

Come to think of it....it's almost time for live king crab season too.

I watched a Food Network show with Bobby Flay on this crab. There's a famous place called Joe's Stone Crab that can ship them to your door but it's expensive. The cool thing I learned was that they catch these crabs and just break off their claws leaving the crabs to adopt a fall on your face plunging technique to bottom feed. Ok, that's not true, but the cool thing is that they do just harvest their claws and the stone crabs grow them back in a year.

Ahh ,,fond memories of my frequent South beach trips waiting for a table....buts its also about the sauce..the sauce:wink:

Moore's Stone Crab on Long Boat Key is Sarasota/Bradenton, FL ships as good a product as Joe's out of Miami for 60% of the cost. And yes this is the best crab to start with!
