Has anyone incorporated climate control into their touchscreen?

I was just wondering if any of the electronic geniuses out there have incorporated the NSX climate control functions into their touchscreens?

I would think that a single double DIN that had audio and climate control would be quite elegant.

Or, on the other hand, if you eliminate the ashtray and the factory climate control unit, could you get TWO double DIN touchcreens in the console (one for audio & one for climate control/NAV)?

That sure would be nice, come to think of it - a single multifunction knob on the dash that could control everything could be a good idea too

I've been out of car audio for some time now. Do they make head units that have "event" handeling outputs now? I know the iPad and others have cool software platforms. That may be an option.

Dan it can be done. The cost is very high and the gain is small. Not worth it. To do it, you would need to use some Crestron home hardware.

OK - This is a wacky idea but.....

How about re-locating the climate control and radio head unit to the trunk and then having a a touchscreen CONTROL it all.

I'm thinking a Crestron, AMX, or Control4 touchscreen that could control the factory electronics.

BTW - This is just an exercise in "would this be possible". I'm not planning on doing it. :)

Is there remote IO devices that the I pad can control. You would need 8 - 10 analog inputs and 10 or 12 relay outputs. Then software for the iPOD.

Yes, such devices are available. You could set up teh touchscreen to do other things too. Lights, door locks, ignition, windows, all sorts of stuff with basic relay control. But it's all a lot of bling with no real gain.

I think eliminating the CCU has a ton of gain. I would love to have a center console that is nothing more than a screen; this includes eliminating the CCU.

Would you be willing to post a link to where the remote IO devices can be obtained?

Then just move it. Don't rebuild it. You are taking on a MASSIVE project. It can be moved to the center console if need be.

I have 20 years in the custom installation business and we do a lot of stuff like this for the home and I am telling you I would not do it in a car. These things break. You don't want to rely on an ipad running your heat in the winter. KISS is a really great rule to follow when modifying cars.

I think relocating it to the center console AND have touchscreen control would be ideal. I fully understand the idea of not being 100% dependent on a control system (my company does a ton of Control4 lighting projects - same concept).

But a main console that was empty except for a touchscreen would have great visual appeal and update the looks of the car.

OK - I want that.

Very nice screen as a piece of hardware

It's an overly-complex user interface with too many mode shifts that don't add to the driving experience.

the control experience from mode to mode is not consistent and thats a distraction...

I could go on but I don't wanna bore you guys, its a very nice proof of concept and I guess production?

I can see the web browser being useful with a condition that the car must be in park for that mode to be used.

They might as well add Skype video conferencing that would be easy
