Hawker/Oddsey PC680 Battery Question

I have done a search,... heck I even posted answers to people who asked about these batteries. I know where to buy them, that I need to get terminals, that they need a battery tender if not driven daily, and that I will need to get a new mount. (Don't want people to think I haven't done my research)

Here are my questions:
Who actually has them?
How long have they lasted?
Any problems worth mentioning?

Thanks in advance.

Here is the specific battery I am looking at:

Jeff, you don't need any weight savings  in fact, we think you need to add more so we stay with you on Dawn Patrols or RPM karting

Keep it simple, just get the Optima for $99 gives you lower center of gravity, it is cheaper, and no one is looking anyway

Hi Jeff,

I have the Black Panther BP-800MJ and I believe it's the predecessor to the Odyssey batteries (which were made/sold by Hawker Energy which was acquired by, or changed its name to, Enersys). I think it's comparable in size and CCA to the current Odyssey PC925 rather than the PC680.

I bought it in April 1998. The first one they delivered was DOA. They exchanged it at that time and I've been using it in my NSX ever since, with an automatic battery charger to keep the battery fully charged any time the car sits for more than a few days.

So, mine has lasted over seven years. And if I'm correct about the name change, you might not find anyone who has owned an Odyssey that long - just because it might not have been on the market under that name for that long, and not because it won't last that long (because it will). Hope that makes sense...

Jeff,

lasted about 2 years on my cars. Though, I don't daily drive them nor do I use battery tender.

Did they die in one of the cars you track, or one of your street driven cars? 2 years seems low to me, and if I can only expect 2 years I think I will go with Hrant's option. Any insight into why they died?

Thanks Andrie, Hrant, and Ken.

I have the Odyssey PC925, and its been pretty reliable since ~2000 -- with battery disconnected and occasional tender during off-season storage. I had to jump-start it recently, and it seems my (low-amp) trickle charger/battery tender will not get it to full charge.

Do I need to replace it? Is there a higher-amp charger I should try first ??
Note: the Odyssey website ( http://www.odysseybatteries.com/charging.htm ) suggests using a 10A or 15A charger.

If I need to replace, can any folks recommend a dealer?? I use the Odyssey PC925 with the custom bracket from Dali -- ideally I'd like to replace with the same battery, or something dimensionally similar.

I had a Odyssey PC680. 2 1/2 weeks was the max (without driving it) before it would and need to be recharged. Too much hassle for a 20 lbs weight savings. I got a Die Hard on there now and had left it for a month, came back and still started. Weight savings is cool but I think I could lose some pounds myself.

Re: Deep-Cycle Recharging of Ody PC925

Odyssey website ( http://www.odysseyfactory.com/odycharg_c.htm ) suggests a number of chargers to deep-cycle charge a PC925 battery

Schumacher SC-2500A (12A) -- http://www.batteryweb.com/schumacher-charger-detail.cfm?Model=SC-2500A
Xenotronix SX150-1 (12A) -- http://www.xenotronix.com/
Interacter PS 1210 ODY (10A) -- http://www.batteryweb.com/interacter-detail.cfm?model=PS 1210

Does anyone have any info on these units? Any recommendations for deep-cycle charging ??

Thanks -- Manuel

One of of member vendors is selling CTEK - http://www.nsxprime.com/forums/showthread.php?t=66375

Your battery may be sulphated - if it's not too bad, this kind of charger can help to recover it. See this article from the CTEK website

I think I am going to get this - seems like a really neat charger. I still have my Optima Yellow Top which won't fully charge - I'm going to see if this will recover it. (Although I am delighted with my replacement Odyssey PC1700)

6 years seems like a pretty good life though - it may be just past its prime now.

13.5 amp hour.. that is even under the PC680 I use, which lasts all of about 72-96 hours or so parked tops with even minimal parasitic drain. I always keep the vehicle plugged in during any down time at all times,, have a small backup, and even still find myself requiring a charger here or there to get a start.

For occasional track or weekend use the light weights work well, for a daily driver I would suggest something up the scale with a higher reserve capacity. When you're towards the extreme bottom end of the scale using the smaller 11-16lb ones, it really doesn't take much to leave you needing a jump start. I would reccomend 17-25 amp hour or up, it would be more ideal for frequent use despite the added weight, or simply swap them around as needed.

Does anyone have any experience with the Schumacher SC-2500A charger, particularly for deep-cycle charging (not battery tender) for gel/AGM batteries like the Odyssey PC925 ??

Best web price I could find is $96.25 at http://www.batterychargers.com/details.cfm?prodid=SC-2500A&catid=2 .

Thanks -- Manuel

I picked up a used Schumacher SC-6000A charger on eBay... between that and getting charged on a long highway drive yesterday, it looks like my Odyssey PC925 battery is back.

I've learned my lesson, and will keep it on a trickle charger going forward.
