Hello. My wife's auto 93 Civic died on the road today. It starts and runs fine until your drive past 15 mph. The rpms will then fluctuate radically and the car dies. The speedometer also does not fuction. In neutral you can rev past 5k normally. I didn't want to drive 10 mph home, so I had it towed. I'm told that the cost to repair this may be more than what the car is worth. I may have to swap in a k20 and make it a track car! Any help is appreciated.

Sounds like a Distributor problem...Inspect the Dist and check that the bearing is ok and that the shaft turns without excess play..then I would replace the Ingnitor if the Dist body looks ok

Could be a multitude of things. It's been too long since I've worked on an EG to remember the car's diagnositic systems. Is it throwing a code? I would assume it is. Given it's OBD1 you can see what the CEL is in about 5 minutes of time and go from there.

I agree, honda's distributors aren't the greatest and can cause almost any scenario involving driving issues. Did the speedometer die at the exact same time as these issues presented themselves?

You drive a NSX and your wife drives a 1993 Civic?

I drove it this morning and nothing is wrong! Hit the gas up to 60 and it sounds fine. I think it has gremlins. My brother-in-law (mechanic) checked it out and can't find anything wrong. My wife took the insurance off already. I may just give it to my cousin.

You own a civic

Yea. I had it towed twice in 3 years. I don't think it's that bad. I never had to tow my 90 accord or 90 camry tho.

the average k20 swap is $10k.

My brother-in-law has done engine swaps before. Getting him to do it is another issue.

The thing about that is my wife loves the beauty of the s2000... but refuses to drive a stick. She was waiting for an automatic or at least a DSG type tranny but i doubt that'll ever happen. Now she wants an SLK...

Thanks for all the input guys, but I may let my cousin worry about the car. He is a wannabe street racer after all. Damn teenagers...
