How long will Acura support the NSX?

Since it's out of production now, I often wonder how long Acura will continue to make replacement parts for the car. I'm not sure what the legal requirement is (seem to remember something about seven years) but obviously these cars are going to be around long after the legal requirement ends. Is there any incentive for Acura to keep stocking parts for 10/20/30 years or does the aftermarket take over the process at some point? Regardless of who fulfills the need, is a waterpump going to be $1000 in ten years?

Doesn't seem like enough cars were made for someone to start producing NOS parts in the future and yet, even with very well maintained cars, certain parts will always be necessary (water pumps, pulleys, suspension pieces) but will they be available? Plus, with the costs of replacement parts (like $250 for one center air vent ), not much incentive for someone to start warehousing parts.

I guess if people find a way to restore Tuckers with only 49 made, then they'll always be a way to keep an NSX going. I've often thought about buying some typical wear parts now and just storing them until it's time to replace. Guess it's a good thing it's a Honda and not likely to fall apart of its own volition.

Funny I almost started this same thread a few weeks back. Seems I can still get the smallest of parts for my 91. 17 years old and parts are only a day away. I wonder when thats going to end.

There is NO legal requirement for a manufacturer to continue producing parts for a vehicle based on age alone. I'm in that line of work and there are quite a few factors that go into determining that.
# of vehicles on road. # of times that part is requested. Whether the company that actually produces the part is still in business. Whether it is cost effective any longer. It is a color coded item or not....the list just keeps going.

My Honda parts catalog goes all the way back to the N600's of the early 1970s. Still can get some of the parts too.

Man, that brings back memories! Wasn't that thing chain driven? Glad to know they are still providing some parts for it, maybe the NSX will live on longer than I do :D

There are certain parts that are out of production forever......example I bought some of the last ivory interior pieces out there. As far as engine and body parts are concerned I am sure there will be no problem.

They will provide parts as long as they have them in stock and after that if there is sufficient demand for filling back orders providing it is convenient and profitable to do so.

They have already begun to phase some part and assemblies out and have been doing so for some time.

Hopefully in years to come they will sell the licensing to produce in demand products/parts to outside vendors and resellers.

My dad drove his N600's into the 1990s...until some punks decided it would be fun to roll it down his driveway.

I'll see if I can find out if Honda has any sort of official policy about this, particularly WRT the NSX. I somehow doubt they have the equivalent of BMW Mobile Tradition (or Mercedes Classic Center), which claims they still make/sell 90% of all the parts for a 2002, for example.

You have to figure they must supply parts to cars under warrantee and somewhat beyond. Last new ones were sold in 06 I think.....Steve

Many interior and non-essential trim pieces for the earlier 1991-1994 cars are no longer available.

I have never really heard a car owner complain about not being able to get parts. Even Oldsmobile owners haven't had many problems from what I have heard thus far.

I'd say for at least another 10 years it shouldn't be too difficult.

You know a good forum to ask that to. The Subaru ..... ummmm, what was that sports car that they had in the early 90's? I can't remember the name, but the car was NSXish, but not as good looking.

I wonder if they have run into that problem. Since that car has been out of production for over 10 years now but Subaru is still a large company, they would probably be a good group to ask about this situation.

As Joe stated above it really depends on the demand and supply, but also on the timing of honda releasing thier legal protected ownership of those parts so the aftermarket can produce them. That is what keeps that old american iron going.

Thsi is not really a viable comparison. The NSX production numbers vs. Oldsmobile production numbers are not even close.

The big advantage is that many parts are the same over the whole production period. The downside is that there are so few cars. But on the other hand Honda doesn't have to 'force' us to buy the subsequent car as there isn't any now and we won't see any in the future. Some companies do this by stopping the production of parts or raising the prices of them in a ridiculous way just to force you to buy the newer model.
If Honda has in mind that it's worth (monetary) to support the NSX at least with parts there (I don't expect more support from them ) should be no problem for us regarding necessary parts. If you're after special parts like Type-r sways etc. I hope you've already bought them.
But please don't do it the way Honda Europe does it by charging us 2-3 times more than in the US. :( I also accuse them to push the cars on the old continent into a full loss if they only slighty crashed (like a 20 mph frontal crash) because this means $20-30k only in parts! But even then you can repair the car for much less with Downforce parts (ok, aftermarket but good fit).

Having Larry and Joe in the same thread reminds me like Le Mans was yesterday! Cheers!

Such as? I'm slowly replacing many interior parts. Slowly going from Ivory to all black.

As someone has stated earlier, many of the Ivory interior parts aren't available anymore. I know for sure that 1994 tan seat belts and driver sunvisors aren't available. Black should be less of a problem, as a lot more black interior cars were built compared to tan. But, if you need parts, best to get them now while you still can. An interesting side note, if a part is no longer available here, you might still be able to get it in Japan. The lower cat heat sheild for my Legend is no longer available from Acura, but I was able to order the same part number at a Japanese Honda dealer.

Worst come to worst maybe we'll transplant the new V10 engine into the NSX.

worst come to worst? that the best thing that could happen to my car. Now, who's going to crash the first one so I can take you engine. lol Guess we'll just have to keep waiting........ and see.
