How to diagnose - head unit or speakers?

If (on stock everything) the sound is fine EXCEPT when I am adjusting the volume (which causes horrible crackling), is it safe to assume the amps and speakers are okay and just the factory head unit is sad?

Not an easy task but my best guidance would be to adjust the fade switch to fully left and then fully right while you're adjusting the volume. If you get the static with both, then it's probably the head unit. If it's with one and not the other, then it's probably the amp in that door.

Did so. Noise moved with the balance. Probably just a dirty knob - not sure whether to repair or replace the HU.

Mine does the same thing every year after sitting for winter.

Try turning the radio off, then twisting the knob back and forth repeatedly. That usually clears mine up.

If that doesn't work. Its possible to pop off the knob and spray come electrical contact cleaner back there.
