This happened tonight just past 6:30PM. As captured by my GoPro dashcam. I missed severe injury or death by less than a second! I was in the Crosstour btw.

Hell, everyone knows that zombies can't drive. Glad you were paying attention and that it was a miss rather than a hit.

A similar thing happened to me a couple of years ago .. light-controlled intersection .. driver ran a red .. except (a) we crashed and I hit rear her rear pass door, and (b) I was going slow enough that the impact wasn't too bad (although $20k damage to my wife's '05 TL). You're probably thinking the highest risk was in hitting the SUV .. but in my case (and maybe yours), I was thinking .. wow, a few seconds later and they would have t-boned me in the driver's door. At least in the frontal crash, you have airbags (and some crumple zone) to help .. but in a t-bone, the risk of dying is much higher. And in my case, the other vehicle was doing about 40-45 mph so I probably wouldn't have made it. For me, the couple of seconds difference was that I had slowed a bit as I entered the intersection because I was about to turn .. but if I had been going straight thru like you, things would have been ugly. Shakes you up how close things come .. but it reminds me of a question I was asked once in some group training project whether I would put my life in the hands of a complete stranger. Of course, everyone thinks 'no way' .. but we subconsciously do it every day .. every time we take a flight; every time we step off a curb into a crosswalk and expect traffic to stop; and every time we drive. Sober thought.

BTW .. the other driver was a young mother; by herself; wasn't on a cellphone; had a learners license but no one else in the car (illegal); just never saw the red light. Miraculously, no one was hurt

 U escaped major injury/cheated death. I am glad you r ok Hugh. I think that driver forgot to take his/her meds or OD on ....or texting?? I got hit from the back due to texting at the light and both of us were stopped.

Dash cam evidence of moron. Hey, which Crosstour do you have? I have an '11 in Glacier Blue, EX-L with Navi. Great car except that the low gas light quit working and the tires are about shot at 25,000 miles.

It would be a good idea for the NSX or any other automotive toys but for the daily driver there would be a lot of upkeep involved (clearing memory, charging etc)

Sorry for the slight detour, but what dash cam are you using? I've wanted to implement one for the longest time but have not found one that I've been satisfied with.

dash cams would save your Azz in court. I am getting one for my car soon. but I dont want to worry about it till i need it, like plugging it in everytime i drive, or erasing data etc.

I need to invest in a Dash Cam as well for my work truck. I put on up to 6,000 miles/month and although I haven't been in an accident with another person yet, I would have liked to re-watch the windshield get soaked with blood when I blasted a deer doing about 90 passing a semi on a 2 lane highway. Literally "BOOM - Splat" and I had to turn the wipers on to clear the window so I could see to pull over off the road as I slowed down.

Plus, I see a TON of rollovers during the winter months up here during my adventures for work.

Also, it could save my butt if in an accident one day.

Very glad you're OK. Yesterday on the way home from work thru downtown PGH I watched a car right in front of me run thru a red light and there was a policeman right at the intersection! I was so hoping to see this inattentive driver get pulled over but the cop was looking down in his car and writing something...

Honest to God I was going to post a new thread soon if I couldn't find an applicable post to bump - I want to start doing the Russia dash cam thing and recording video on most or all drives. I wanted to see if anyone here has used anything to recommend. I've had a few close calls recently and decided it's time.

I don't think it'd be too much of a hassle to purge the memory after any drive that went w/o incident.

Fifth Gear recently had an intro to low-cost dash cam alternatives, and there are now several iPhone apps that might be just the ticket - low cost and quality enough for what's needed. Has anyone tried any, and could provide some unbiased input?

Also, part of me would love to find something with more than front or front & back video coverage - something that records front/back/left/right, etc. that would make me feel better about occasionally leaving my NSX parked somewhere, as well as let it run on Friday & Saturday nights in my Accord. Living in the city, I've had people walk on the hood/roof/trunk of my Accord, bust off side mirrors, and leave big dings in the bumper. My friend several blocks away had a hit & run at night into his MR2 and a neighbor security camera caught it...but no license plates were able to be seen. At least with some video, there could be a better chance of capturing helpful images to catch the jerks who do things like this.

Don't want to thread jack Hugh's close call, although this is somewhat relevant to what happened to him...he caught something that - if an accident occurred - could have helped his case....But it might get better attention if we created a new thread - just to check - has anyone else been wanting to find a dash cam alternative for their DD and/or NSX?

I want one that starts to record when car is in the ACC mode, record for a week or so then if nothing worth keeping then delete it and keep going ya know

Interesting you had a dash cam. Do people actually do that? At first I guessed you were in a police car. Great evidence in court I would agree. Glad you made it.

Wow, glad you're ok. That dash cam could save your ass in court for sure.

I wish I had a dash cam in my ford lightning back in 93 when I was hit head on at 55mph by a driver who fell asleep at the wheel. I have a perfect video of it in my head but it'd be nice for others to view it. The passenger in the other car went through their windshield and then mine. Two helicopters on scene for the other vehicle, I walked away from the hospital that night. It was a very bad accident but not the worst one I've ever been in.

Damn, I forgot to check in on this thread. Kyras, I have a 2011 Crosstour EX-L 4WD with the Navi. I bought it used about 18 months ago after some idiot in a Tahoe made a left turn in front of me while I was in my 2010 Crosstour. I t-boned the idiot on his driver's side at about 45 MPH. The Tahoe rolled about 4 or 5 times coming to rest on its roof. Luckily it was not packed with kids. The driver was unhurt as was I. Anyway, the 2010 was totalled so I replaced it with the current one that now has 48,000 miles on it with no issues whatsoever except for the horrendous blind spot issue that was solved with stick-on convex mirrors.

The dash cam is a Hero3 Black edition. It is set to simply record in looping mode and is plugged into a 12v source so it constantly has power and with a 64GB card, it records a few hours at 1080p/40fps then simply continues recording when the memory is full by overwriting the earliest recording. It automatically creates a new MP4 file every 15 minutes. I have adhesive mounts in the Crosstour and in the NSX on top of the Nav Pod.

Wanna see some good dash cam footage? Search YouTube for Russian trucker videos. In Russia, the law mandates that commercial trucks have dash cams so these guys capture all manners of highway carnage.

I'm getting a dashcam installed in the lotus next week, and will be getting another one for the NSX.

I decided it was a must have after I read a story on another forum about a guy pulling out of a parking lot, when he was rear ended by the guy behind him.

As I recall, he got out, discussed/exchanged information with the other driver, and I believe he was waiting on a police car to arrive so he could get a police report for insruance purposes, etc. While they were waiting, the guy driving the car behind the rear-ender popped out, pulled the rear-ender aside, and told him (thinking he was out of earshot of the victim), that for $100 he would tell the police that the victim backed/reversed into the guy, and it was all his fault.

People are fucked up. It's a sad reality when people need dashcams. :(

Apparently there is a bug with the GoPro looping feature. When it reached the end of the memory it simply drops out of record mode instead of continuing to record over the earliest recording. I'm trying to sort it out with their tech support.

Haha, thanks L_RAO, have you seen this?
