Inaccuracy of "first new post" function

This is a function that puts a down arrow next to the title of each topic that contains a new post that you haven't seen before. However, I've found that it is often inaccurate. Sometimes no arrow is shown, even when I haven't seen some posts in the topic.

Just FYI. If anyone knows more about this, please fill me in.
