does any one know if installing close ratio gears in a 5 speed transmission will increase the top speed from 168 mph to a higher top speed. joe

Changing the ratio between gears will not make any difference in the top speed unless you change the ratio of 5th. Going taller will slow you down and lower you will run out of revs. The stock gearing is optimal for the horse power and torque available in a stock engine. If you what to go faster you need more power.

You will achieve quicker acceration up to 1/4 mile, but will take longer to reach top speed. You will need more power to reach higher than 168mph.

The close ratio gears do not change 1st or 5th gear ratio. So to answer your question, NO.
