Insurance premium increases due to ChoicePoint

I recently received a notice from my insurance, Liberty Mutual, that my premium is about to increase based on a Motor Vehicle Record obtained from ChoicePoint Service/Dataflo Systems.

The event is almost a year old 3/2007 and it indicates that I was driving 55 in a 30 mph zone.

First of all, is this for real? (I know it is... just can't believe it). Can insurance companies start raising rates based on anything and everything you do? If I pick my nose in the car, will they consider my driving habits risky enough to warrant a higher premium?

I never received a ticket and my driving record is flawless. Does anyone know how this ChoicePoint thing works? Is it like the cameras at intersections that catch people who run red lights?

Oh it's real. And they can do this. They "can" pull your driving record pretty much whenever they want. Most of them don't unless they have a reason. ie: you were just in an accident and reported a claim. It costs them money each time they pull a record. I used to use choicepoint when I worked in the claims side of a major insurance company for many years. We only used them to order police reports though. You can check them out here.

I'd say it's time to go shopping for a different company. Be careful though. Alot of them want to pull your credit now just to give you a quote. Apparently the fact that you're late paying $20 to your dentist means your a shitty driver.

They can raise rates based on tickets received. However, if you never received a ticket, it's possible that there was an error of some sort. Call your insurance agent and ask how you can have this information corrected. You may want to try calling ChoicePoint as well.

I don't recommend shopping around for a different insurance company at this time, as someone else suggested. Chances are the prospective insurance company will find the same erroneous information and charge you higher rates (or decline your application) as a result.
