Intercooler for BBSC

I need to find an intercooler solution for my BBSC. I would prefer something like Romeo's setup but haven't seen where to get it. I have seen several cars with it, so someone has to be building them..

Anyone have any idea where I can find that setup? Or how to build it?

Why not the one that MB sells? If im not mistaken Romeo's requires replaceing the engine hatch with a vented one.(costly)

Believe me, I've tried that route, I think he's just too busy, I am interested in going with alternatives, if possible.

I don't mind replacing the engine hatch.

$$$$ for the hatch vented cooler. The "usual" front mounted spearco to the pre throttle aftercooler runs about $2000-2500

Alient, I'm sure Mo at Elite can build you one like mine, but you need to purchase a taitec to have a solution like mine. I also don't think there is any way around it with a stock (or simialr configurated) exhaust. Here are some pics ...

I'm sure mark is overloaded with nsx stuff, but I don't think it actually takes him any time to place the order to have one made... he buys the core i beleive, and has it made to order. He might be too busy to install it for you, but any qualified tech can do it...

Kevin,

That's a nice setup. Looks like it will require a rear diffuser? Do you think there is any added 'turbo lag' with all that piping?

What's the ballpark cost for somehting like that?

ALIENT

Maybe I can convince Kevin to sell you his intercooler setup and get him to do my turbo kit:). You would not need a diffuser for this intercooler. Actually without the diffuser the intercooler could be placed furthur back towards the bumper. There probably is a little pressure drop resulted from the intercooler, but we have not measured how much.

Thanks for the replies,
I'm still surprised that no one knows anything about the Romeo Set-up.

Probably because Romeo's is one of a kind.

IMO, Romeo's setup may not be that efficent since heat rises and the core would absorb a ton of heat from the motor while the car is not in motion. Otherwise the setup seems pretty strait forward, i/c core on top of the motor, piping from the sc to inlet and then back around along the firewall towards the firewall.

That issue is easily remedied by mounting a fan to the underside of the core. If the hatch is set up with a shroud (as Romeo's was), cool air will continue to be drawn through the core even when sitting still.

I'm pretty sure that it's not a one off. Maybe Romeo built a couple extra for his buddies or something, but there was one for sale on here a while back that unfortunatly unable to purchase.

I'm interested in purchasing a complete unit. But I guess I would settle for are some specs/part numbers or any information. I assume Romeo had done a lot of research on getting everything sized/setup nicely and I was just trying avoid starting over from scratch.

Romeo where art thou? :-)

How far do you want to go? I put a MKIV Supra intercooler in my trunk (flush with the trunk lid), although I've since pulled it out and I'm replacing it with an OEM STI intercooler because it makes the hose routing much easier and is more effecient. This requires a second trunk lid (unless you want to hack your original one), which wasn't an issue for me since I needed a second one for the track anyway (modified for a wing I'm building).

You might be able to get away without hacking the trunk lid if you had a good fan behind it, but I like to keep things simple myself. ;-)

To my knowledge he DIDN'T build a couple more for his buddies. His certainly was a one off creation. I watched that system grow for several years into the final product and trust me, there wasn't anything 'production' about it.
If I'm not mistaken, the one that was for sale on here a little while back, was in fact his since he sold the car and the owner removed it. I think someone that has already spoken up on this thread can vouche for that.

92NSX's post is 100% accurate.

Well... I could be wrong, but here's my reasoning a for sale post of the intercooler from Initial D.

I had him send me some pics, and the set up looks almost identical to Romero's (before the CF plumbing and dry ice box). The only other difference that I can see is the thickness of the heat exchanger.

Perhaps that is a standard heat exchanger with BOV bung?

The heat exchanger core was off-the-shelf... but all the piping(both the metal and carbon fiber ones), brackets, dry-ice container, pop-off valve and shroud were custom.

Alright, if that is the case, does anyone have any idea what the part number for the heat exchanger is? I tried Googling Spearco and can't find any cores like that. Actually I can't even find Spearco's site.

After some more searching I found another one.

It looks like the end pieces are too common to be very custom. Even the weld points on the piping on Initial D's and the one below are identical.

Doesn't that Mechanics Modifiers Direct sell something like that?

I just checked them out. They have something similar.

If I can't find this other one, I'll contact them. Thanks for the lead.
