Vote who you think was (is) the better player and elaborate on it...

I voted for Jordan but this is based upon everything Jordan and Koby have done up until today. Seeing that Jordan completed his career, and Koby still has plenty more years left, I definitely see a possibility of Koby outdoing Jordan in the future. Koby is definitely the most jordanesque nba player out there today.

I wonder if you will be asking this question after the Lakers lose the series to the Celtics. MJ was the best ever to play the game. Kobe is very good but he will not become better than Jordan was.

And this my friends, is why here in the Northeast we can't take you Socal people seriously.

This is about us.............Because you're so special to me...........You're the beat to my heart...You're the air I breathe......Because you're so special to me........

They played in different eras with different teammates so it's impossible to judge them by their accomplishments. Kobe is clearly a better shooter and was more adept at shooting at a younger age. Both have the same killer instinct. Kobe makes more difficult shots, I give a slight edge to MJ for his driving skills and ball handling. MJ had a season where he averaged over 37 points per game, but that's nearly impossible with today's players and defense. Kobe scored 81 points in today's game, MJ's highest was 69. Overall, if I could pick a player for my dream team it would be Kobe over Jordan. This discussion will not have an agreeable conclusion, these are just my feelings.

in the early 2000's i would have said jordan, but since i started watching again this year i am suprised at how good kobe is!

if the lakers win the finals then i will vote kobe, if not ill vote jordan

where's that from? tom leykis uses it on his show. is it actually Kobe?

The game has evolved and the players are better than ever before. More athletic, more instinctive about the game and better trained. Given the era in which Kobe is playing, I'd have to say he is the better player. I say that b/c I'm not sure MJ would be as notable in today's NBA as he was in the NBA of his era.

Kobe's press conference after he was accused of rape in Colo. in 2003. His wife was by his side and he admitted that he cheated on her.......That's why Leykis plays the humping noises in the background.......

Jordan. More professional, that or not stupid enough to get caught on camera bad mouthing (whining) about his team mates and wanting to be traded etc etc. Kobe has the talent, but not the brains or common sense. He is clouded by all his money and all the worship bestowed upon him by the fans. (seriously for some of you folks, hes just a basketball player, a really good one, but thats it, yet some people treat him like a god  ) Jordan has been out of the game for how long now? Yet the name and brand still resonates around the NBA. I doubt Kobe will have the same impact when hes gone.

Interesting, likewise does this mean if the Lakers beat the Celtics, Koby is better? Now, don't get me wrong, I'm a huge Jordan fan, but to say Koby will never become better than Jordan is well.......its only your opinion. Koby still has plenty of years left in his career to live up to the Jordan name. Obviously his accomplishments and skill level will never truely be understood by all the haters! "Koby is very good." um....more like the best in the NBA right now. (crowd chanting MVP, MVP!)

Dude you are not representing your school well my consistently misspelling his name. BTW, I went to UCLA. :D

I believe it is easier to score more points than it was in the mid to early 90's. I think the game was much tougher back then (not more talented, but more of a hardcore game). There was Shaq in his prime, the bad boy Charles Barkely, Ewing, Olajuwon, David Robinson. There were more good big men who played big. Today the only true big men are Yao and an aging Duncan, with an upcoming Howard (most are more athletic vs the brute force post game). Back then it was more of a "let them play" type of game vs the many touch fouls of today. The majority of Kobe's points come from free throws. MJ and KB are both good at driving, but I give the edge to MJ for his ability to finish a little better. MJ was able to shoot outside, but he said he didn't like to shoot outside because he feels it'll take away from his game because he didn't want to end up settling for the jump shot. I think MJ is also the better clutch person as well. Kobe is starting to age, IMHO, I don't think he'll surpass Jordan. ONTH, LeBron is averaging almost a tripple double every game (look at his stats log, he's constantly flirting with a tripple double). I think if anyone can surpass Jordan, it'll be LeBron.

+1 on the touch fouls, if MJ played today he'd probably score much more.

I think MJ played better defense than Kobe as well.

Regarding Lebron - its possible that he'll pass some of MJ's marks statistically, but scoring a ton of points doesn't automatically equal numbers in the W column. As Herm Edwards said, "You play to win the game", and Lebron's teams have yet to do that.

I vote for Kareem. "You try running up and down the court with Walton and Lainer for 48 minutes."

MJ was probably a better talent, but had many distractions over his years. KB is more singularly focussed, and takes losing more personal, so he gives everything he has, all season long.

Here are the real stats, not speculation. 1995 was the last year the league averaged 100 points or more per game. The NBA had to institute several key changes to the game to promote higher scoring.

1985 - 110.8 points per game league average MJ 28.2
1986 - 110.2 points per game league average MJ 22.7
1987 - 109.9 points per game league average MJ 37.1
1988 - 108.2 points per game league average MJ 35
1989 - 109.2 points per game league average MJ 32.5
1990 - 106.3 points per game league average MJ 33.6
1991 - 106.3 points per game league average MJ 31.5
1992 - 105.3 points per game league average MJ 30.1
1993 - 105.3 points per game league average MJ 32.6
1994 - 101.5 points per game league average MJ n/a
1995 - 101.4 points per game league average MJ 26.9
1996 - 99.5 points per game league average MJ 30.4
1997 - 96.9 points per game league average MJ 29.6
1998 - 95.6 points per game league average MJ 28.7
1999 - 91.6 points per game league average MJ n/a
2000 - 97.5 points per game league average MJ n/a
2001 - 94.8 points per game league average MJ n/a
2002 - 95.5 points per game league average MJ 22.9
2003 - 95.1 points per game league average MJ 20
2004 - 93.4 points per game league average
2005 - 97.2 points per game league average
2006 - 97 points per game league average
2007 - 98.7 points per game league average
2008 - 99.9 points per game league average

With regard to free throws
Kobe thru 12 seasons - 5621 points
MJ thru 12 seasons - 5753 points

As for finishing around the basket, I think it's a no contest, nobody finishes better than Kobe.

Are kidding me.....17 pts, 17 pts that all you got in the Finals WHEN YOUR TEAM NEEDS POINTS.

Jordan's playoff avg is 33.3 and his Finals avg is 33.4 (both NBA records).
Oh by the way, Jordan holds the Finals series scoring avg as well 41.1 (also a record) when HIS TEAM NEEDED POINTS to beat that year's best team Phoenix and the NBA MVP - Charles Barkley.

Case closed.....how can you be the best finisher when you don't score? Kobe's more acrobatic and his shots around the basket are more gracefully (when he makes them - .459 Kobe vs .497 Jordan) but this ain't ballet.

PS To Kobe lovers......no more Shaq stealing possessions or clogging the lane.....what's the excuse now. NEW FLASH Kobe can be shutdown and this has happened before---Tayshaun Prince.
