Kenwood DNX8120 with which iPod?

I recently had a Kenwood DNX8120 HU installed. I have an older iPod mini with the latest iTunes software, which I used for testing purposes on the iPod function of the 8120. For whatever reason I can't use any of the functions on the 8120 to control the iPod. I'm only able to use the iPod itself to contol the functions. Any thoughts on this at to what I could do to have the iPod functions/controls work on the 8120 as oppose to using the iPod unit? This iPod mini that I'm using is just temporary, as I will be upgrading to a newer iPod soon, but still I want to be able to get it to work.

Now I have another question related to the same topic. I am going to buy a new 16GB iPod nano-chromatic. Has anyone use the new iPod nano-chromatic 8GB or 16GB with the 8120? If so, were there any intergration problem with this particular iPod? Some reviews from current users would be great. TIA!

I think the 8120 should be working with just about every ipod out there.. the only problems i've heard about are with the iphone... If you contact Kenwood directly and let them know which exact ipod you have, I'm sure they can tell you whether it is 100% compatible. Is your ipod software itself up to date (not just the itunes)?

I think were taking about the samething? I don't/haven't used an iPod (newbie) until recently so bare with me. I just sync my iPod mini yesterday 9/17 with iTunes and it has indicated that I my iPod has the latest firmware. It that what you're refering to? If that is the case then maybe it's just because my iPod mini is incompatiable with the 8120. However, I will call Kenwood to confirm this.

may be something to consider. i have a 4th generation 20gb and a 5th generation 30gb ipod. The 5th generation one allows me to use the ipod's interface through my Kenwood5120 whereas the 4th generation does not. The newer ipods work better with the Kenwood headunits than do the older ones.

I installed a new Kenwood HU and iPod for a family friend. I tested out my iPhone just for S&G's, and it worked fine and charged the iPhone too. I don't remember what model it was. My phone is an iPhone 3G.

On the manual of the Kenwood DNX8120 it listed the following iPods that are compatiable with this HU.

iPod nano
iPod nano (2nd generation)
iPod nano (3rd generation)
5th generation iPod (iPod with video)
iPod classic
** iPod touch

** Update iPod software to the latest version supports audio only on iPod touch

I suspect (supports audio only) this also applies to the G1 iPhones and the current iPhone 3G as well
Since my iPod mini wasn't even listed, I guess it's not compatiable or at least not fully.
