I just wanted to let others know about my personal experience with Meguiars Clay Bar. I have no affiliation with the company--nor am I a vendor of any of their products--although I am a fan of their products.

I have always heard about the clay bar, but today was my first time using it. The product is simply amazing. It removes contamination that a normal washing/waxing could never remove. You can really feel the before and after difference. Just run a naked finger over the paint after wash and dry before the clay bar and afterwards, and you will feel the difference.

I bought the kit from Pep Boys that includes the lubricant (quick detailer), 2 SMALL clay bars (they are about the size 10 stacked poker cards--maybe smaller).

My tip is to break every sectoin down into mini-sections, and re-knead the clay after every mini section. Otherwise, be sure to keep checking to see if your clay is too contaminated, and re-knead as needed.

It's a great product and really does what it claims. Give it a try. Roughly $20 for the kit at Pep Boys (2 clay bars individually wrapped, i large bottle of lubricant, 1 small bottle of wax, and 1 MF Towel).

 You think you are sick? I clay-bar'd under my wing and behind the door handles...

That's a good idea about using the old ones for the wheels. I am going to keep that in mind.

Yeah, I remember my first clay bar too. Life was so different before the clay bar came along. I could have friends come over without sneaking out to clay bar their car because I had already clay bared everything I owned. It got so bad I was clay baring cars at stop lights. The results of clay bar are amazing. I have gotten a few friends hooked on clay bar and plan on becoming a distributer,  be-careful with the clay bar!

I agree the clay bar is great, I tried it for the first time early this year.
I recently saw on one of the classic car TV shows, that it's best to spray your favorite detail spray on the car first and let the clay bar glide over the wet spray.
