My work is paying for my cell and service.

I currently have the Blackberry Tour.

We now have an option to get either the iPhone or an Android phone in addition.

I'm with Sprint (have used Verizon and Cingular prior to AT&T in the past) and like the clarity and phone reception.

If I stay with Sprint then we know that iPhone is out of the running.

Should I just choose between the HTC EVO™ 4G or Samsung Epic™ 4G?

I've heard that the iPhone doesn't take falls very well (my Blackberry is pretty tough).

one of these...is the 'bleeding edge tech'

I had Sprint with the Palm Pre, and just switched over to the iPhone with AT&T. Here's my experience so far living in SoCal

Sprint
Pro: Voice quality, coverage excellent, few (if any) dropped calls, price per month (data, text, voice), easy to get employee discounted rates, calls always go through
Cons: Phones aren't as good, you'll pay $10 per month extra for any 4G phone (even if you're live in an area that doesn't have 4G), battery life for 4G phones generally bad (Palm Pre 3G required charging each night with minimal usage)

AT&T
Pro: Has the iPhone, price (because I have a discount), has other cool phones, is on GSM for global coverage, battery life better (depending on phone, iPhone4 will go 2 days with minimual usage before charge), 3G speed supposedly "fastest"
Cons: Service, drop calls, overall coverage much worse in both voice and data cateogories, calls can be denied in populous areas, no 4G quite yet.

Lastly, for the iPhone, just get a crazy rugged case.

Hapa88,

that was well written and to the keep points.

I can deal with more of the cons of the Sprint phones as oppose to the AT&T service.

This is primarily for business (con calls, business dealings, etc.) where I have to have the best in reliable network or it can kill a deal.

got my EVO in july. Hard to beat a great phone, 4g and the simply everything plan. Not one dropped call and no hiccups with the phone. I use it more than my laptop!! You will need a bigger battery right off the bat!!!

I have the Evo also .... mine is rooted and I use it for a broadband modem.
4g speeds rival my cable speeds at home. Battery life sucks and so does the camera.

I'm in the same boat as you, Blackberry Tour and contract ending - however, I'm with Verizon. I kinda prefer the iPhone only because I'm a MAC user at home and it will sync easier for apps and iTunes. As long as I can occassionally browse the web when needed and most importantly, use the phone for email and phone calls, I'm happy.

The Samsung Fascinate seems impressive with Verizon, anyone have real-life feedback on this unit?

I have the EVO. It's pretty awesome. I don't know of a better phone.
It's processor will kill the battery in 12-15 hours, but it's still awesome.
Some days I don't even boot up my laptop after work. I just use my EVO for an hour or two.

Well I have the Iphone 3GS and BB for work they work ok I been looking for new phone as my contract expire soon with ATT I like ATT been with them forever but don’t like the iphone 4 thinking about waiting for 5Iphone but been looking @ dell Streak 5 best screen I have seen it’s tablet and phone let’s see which way I go but so far dell looks the best for ATT with Android 2.2 good luck

I have the samsung fascinate, it is a excellent phone that have a great screen and it's super light and thin. It has a better processor, screen, gpu, camera (Even though it had less mega pixel, it has a better sensor), and better battery life. The problem is that samsung soft ware sucks. But that is nothing the developers can't fix.

Yes, it is nothing the developers can't fix. But the problem is that they won't, because Samsung has too many phones, and many more coming out.

I had the Samsung Instinct, and it had the similar software issues. They made like 3 updates while I had it, then they stopped working on it. It got progressively better, but it still had issues. . .I just don't think Samsung has enough developers to support all their phones on the market AND in their new ones about to be released.

EVO here too. Like others, for light interweb browsing I'll as often as not just grab my phone and surf.

It is more rugged than the iphone (moreso with a silicone skin) and with the extended battery it has more liveable run time between charges. Unless you become conditioned to have a car charger and top the battery off while on the road you will want an extended battery. 4G and bluetooth in addition to the processor help to run the OEM battery down fast.

Another cool feature is the ability to use the EVO as a wi-fi hotspot and provide wireless bandwidth to up to 6 wireless devices. That functionality costs extra monthly and I did experiment with it before ditching it due to cost/use ratio. Now I just use PDA Net and tether the EVO by USB for free.

Bad camera? The 8MP camera works great for me.

My .02

Use Google Voice and redirect to all possible phones and one them could be your cell. Pick a cell that you enjoy having it. For me, iphone4 coz of video and camera. I am sure if anyone played with GV, its perfect telephone router in the cloud. PM for any questions.

When I say developers I'm talking about third party guys like on xdadevelopers.com. They have to running leaked versions of 2.2 and custom roms that fixes a lot of problems the phone came with.

My issue with Verizon prior to Sprint wasn't the dropped calls, but rather the quality and clarity of the calls.

With Sprint it sounds like a LAN line.

That all depends on the phone you're using too...

With my phone I've had no issues with my droid incredible..... the call quality is amazing... on the speaker phone too.. It works better than my cisco voip phone i have on my desk!

I also agree that the phone plays a huge difference in call quality. I also seem to remember that Sprint & Verizon have roaming agreements with each other. . (mainly on voice only though, not data). I believe that it must be true, because those are the only 2 carriers in the US on CDMA. . .

as someone who's sells verizon....I would tell you to ask people around where you live. You're gonna hear nothing but such and such is the best nationwide and blah blah blah, with whatever carrier you go to.

If you're gonna stay with Sprint, definitely go with their Evo. keep in mind they are out dated but coming from a blackberry you will be hard pressed to find anything in BB's line up that competes.

If you're gonna consider ATT, I would take a relook at Verizon. Never make a current decision (saying you had better quality years ago shouldnt really weigh in now...as technology changes so fast)

Iphone 4-I'm having this issue with customers who are gonna be PISSED when the newest one comes out. I'm not an Apple guy, however there havent been the response that Verizon thought with the Iphone 4. Are they selling? yes....but getting an outdated phone, of not being LTE capable. The build quality of them is pretty impressive, however good luck dropping them. Or prepare to put on a case that looks like the old sprint construction phones.

If verizon gets back in the mix, I would consider that you look at the HTC thunderbolt or the Motorola Bionic

Another thought to throw at you, as I used my original Blackberry for years is, how dependent are you with your physical keyboard. Do you do a lot of texting/emails sort of things. I've tried out the virtual keyboards, and for what I do, I just needed a physical keyboard, and ended with the original droid. And I wouldnt trade it for anything

Good points.

I had Verizon for over a decade. Very loyal customer.

then towards the last year, the quality of sound just started to get worse and worse.

I was asking the clients to repeat themselves. IMHO, that's just simply rude to ask a client to repeat themselves.

I switched to 3 different phones in Verizon thinking it was the phone.

It wasn't.

So my friend (who got me from AT&T to Verizon in the first place) both jumped on to Sprint. The sound quality was MUCH better. And since Sprint was in bed with Verizon in roaming areas I figured that I had the best of both worlds.

The irony is that my friend went to AT&T since he just loves the iPhone that much.

Perhaps he'll go to verizon iPhone. he does admit that AT&T voice sucks.

Sound quality == device, technology, Traffic etc. I think verizon is getting overloaded so the quality suffers. Sprint use to be horrible (still have it) and got much better. ATT is a different story...don't like it and have it coz of iphone.

So an update to my earlier post in this thread, my BlackBerry finally took a final shit yesterday. I went ahead and replaced with the iPhone and remained on Verizon. So far, the phone is great! However, battery life sucks.
