my X died, I think it needs a new Battery!

The positive terminal cable was corroded every since I purchased the car (2+ years ago). I cleaned it out couple weeks ago and it starts fine every since.

Just earlier today at shell gas station...after pumping gas, I tried to start the car, but it wouldn't start, it didn't even crank. My friend tried to jump the battery, but still no good :frown:. So we had to push start it!.

But yeah...I made it home safe and sound, I thought my X was going die while driving home...after I parked it in the garage, I turned off the car and tried to start it up again, it didn't start...so I'm pretty sure the battery is done for.

Here's my question...what's a good battery for our X? or a good enough battery for NSXs...I have a friend who works at pepboys that can get me a good discount (40-50% off ). But all they have there are bosch batteries (~$100) for the nsx...

Oh yea...the positive terminal cable clam broke too!!!! :confused:and the red cover piece was burned 1/4 way up....WTH.

So here's my other question...how can I replace the broke clam on the positive terminal cable....should I bring it to any audio shop and have them fix it?

any advice would be greatly appreciated...thanks

Hung

I can tell you what battery NOT to buy...don't buy an Optima. They are expensive junk - I went through three of those before I had the last one taken out in disgust. My personal preference is an Interstate battery. I had one in a Mustang that I was restoring once and I was amazed at how long it could sit and hold a charge. An Interstate battery will last for many years. I put one in the NSX after the third Optima, and I haven't had any trouble with it, although I have only had it for about six months so far.

Many people have reported good experiences with Sears Diehards and Kirkland batteries from Costco.

If the positive cable is in good shape aside from the clamp, cut off the japanese-style band-type terminal and have it replaced it with a heavier american-style terminal. Afterwards, be absolutely sure to cover the positive terminal with some sort of plastic or rubber cover as a safety precaution to avoid an underhood fire.

Any audio shop should be able to handle this with ease. They also sell high-end terminals for audio applications. But in any case, make sure to put a cover over the positive terminal.

Battery Discussion - One comment about battery tenders - In my book, if a battery needs a battery tender kept on it in order to hold a charge, then that battery is just pathetic. The exception to this is if you only drive your NSX once a month and it just sits the rest of the time. A decent battery should be able to hold a charge if the car is driven somewhat regularly. I think there is no better battery than the Interstate in this regard - it holds a charge without a lot of charging and maintenance.

oh wow...thanks for the heads up about the optima battery...I'm going to try the bosch battery.

I took out the battery last night....man, that thing is heavy. now my car sitting without a battery.

I agree with this with one exception and that's aftermarket alarms. They draw more dark current than you think and can draw down a battery pretty quickly, quickly being relative to a car that is being stored. I always put a tender on mine when it's going to be a week or two before I drive it again.

To the OP, I'd be a little concerned about the positive terminal cap being burned. Might just be from a loose terminal making intermittent contact or could be from excessive current draw. The alternator could be trying to constantly charge the battery because of a) bad battery b) loose terminal or c) something wrong with the charging system. I'd keep an eye on it after you change the terminal and buy a new battery.

The amount of time a battery will hold a charge for the most part depends on the capacity of the battery and the amount of current being drawn. The parasitic draw really depends on the car because there are a lot of variables, especially if aftermarket electrical accessories have been added. That said, it is best practice if you don't drive everyday to keep your battery fully charged, safely. It doesn't have to be a month that it sits, it could just be a week. A well maintained battery will last longer than one that is cyclically charged and discharged, worst case being completely discharged.

Interstate does make good batteries. But I would not hesitate to buy a cheap Costco or Walmart battery with a really good warranty either. Buy a properly sized battery and make sure it fits and is installed well. Ditto on Jett's negative comments on Optima, there are a lot of bad stories to go along with the good. Nothing wrong with old fashioned plate batteries. Batteries do go bad and most of the time it's because people abuse with their cars, so being able to go into a big retailer and having it swapped out under warranty for free is a nice insurance policy to have.

That burned out terminal is probably a result of a short. My guess would be that during removal of the battery or someone working on the car, it touched up against a ground via a socket wrench and one of those metal straps that hold the battery down. An audio shop is a great place to take it to have the battery terminal replaced as audio battery terminals, depending on the make and model, are the finest battery terminals around. I recommend Stinger, Streetwires, Tsunami, or Lighting Audio terminals.

For comparrison my car has a 37ma parasitic draw. I have an interstate MT-35 battery. The charging system maintains the battery at 14.3 volts at the battery. The starter draws ~90 amps during cranking. All's good in the neighborhood.

So your NSX with a 100% charged battery will probably start after sitting for 40 days. Typically less as the battery is not 100% charged.
The NSX with a racing battery would probably last a week.

I installed an ACDelco Professional Battery instead of bosch battery...First start feels kind of weak, but after 20 mins of idleing, it starts right up....the way it should!
