i was driving to work this morning. In plainview NY, right outside north shore hospital...was a 94 red nsx that rear ended a rides unlimited bus. It went under the bus...not damaging the front of the car...the impact was to the windshield where it meets the hood. The bumper shattered the windshield. If he was going 5-10 mph faster, he would have been decapitated. Because the car is so low...it went clear under the rear of the bus. Car had MD plates...looks like this MD is going to a MD...got really lucky he wasnt killed...car is totaled...i assume...anyone else see it?

Wow, that would suck, not only for the moment of "ohmygod I'm going to be decapitated," but also for the second moment of the same when you've survived the first and you're waiting for someone else to rear-end you and drive you further forward.

This is why I follow anything with a high-rise bumper at a distance. Always, always, always. I change lanes if I can. Scares me silly to be behind them.

Wow, that's really scary. Note to self - do not drive behind high vehicles, large trucks or buses!

I've been in drive through's a few times behind large pickup trucks and SUV's and thought I would fit right under the back end if I hit it. It would be scary to see such an accident. There should be a law requiring a minimum bumper height.

There should be a law requiring a minimum bumper height.

There is - for various types of vehicles.

I'm sure I will catch flames for this, but do you really think the bus was backing up at a rate of speed to cause such damage to the NSX?

Why of course not - the NSX driver was not paying attention to the large vehicle in front of him. PERIOD!! In fact, "seize the day" even posted that the NSX rear-ended the bus, so bumper height offers no help if the trailing driver is at fault.

Who said the bus was backing up? I don't get this comment:confused:

There was no point to the post. Just a fact that this car is LOOOOWWW and that he got away lucky that he wasnt going faster...or one dead doc! Thank god no one rear ended him after (as mentioned above). The above poster, i guess, is never guilty of not paying attention...picking his nose, or sneezing. That is all it takes! Maybe we will all remember to be more careful...perhaps, this post could save your life... that would make this the most important post ever made to this forum...and i am just a newbie... lol

careful out there in all the short driving cars....

Have though along similar lines many times. Even with normal sedans it is not uncommon to see these in accidents 'dive under' a truck or bus. Just the car following the path of least resistence I guess.
When driving I always try to get away from lingering behind large moving objects like vans, trucks or busses. Not just because they are always the winners in a collision with any smaller family-car but also because they block my line of sight and require more rome for manouvring.
For the same reason, I will always try to get away from them when one is driving behind me. Simply because they will never be able to achieve the braking-distance my X is capable of. And I definetely do not want to be 'swept away' or 'get stuck between' by such a vehicle from behind when an accident or situtation develops in front of me which I could avoid easily when driving with nothing behind me.

I'd suggest either slowing down or letting them pass you, but not trying to get away from them. For starters, there seems to be a standard option on SUVs that makes their owners feel like they have to tailgate, so speeding up is just insuring that they will tailgate you at even more unsafe speeds. You're also more likely to get a speeding ticket, since a cop will probably see you as the problem driver, not the SUV owner.

I prefer slowing down, so I have plenty of room between me and the next vehicle. Not only is it way safer, since I have plenty of time to deal with surprises, and therefore so does the bozo behind me, but it also pisses said bozo off, and that's what really matters.

Never reward a tailgater. :p

Hi Aiken,
I was more referring to the usual trucks and busses, not so much to the SUV's that are driving around. They are not as common here as they are in the US.
And getting away from a truck of bus usually is not really difficult in the X. To be honest, usually I'm driving the left most lane and, if traffic, weather and other circumstances permit, tend to be rather quick on the street. Very quick even sometimes :)

Regardless of if the NSX was at fault in this particular collision, the bumper height laws are seemingly just there for people to look at and say 'oh well'. At least here in Indiana it seems like that since ever day I see trucks running around with bumpers so high I always end up praying, 'I hope that guy sees me here at the light and does not run over me,' and it is pretty nerve racking. If this situation had been reversed, and the NSX got rear ended by a vehicle with high bumpers I think most people on here would be humming a different tune.
