This coming Spring I'm going to build my dream garage! But I need some help. What are the must-have items or features? It must be functional to store my NSX and tools...not just a showroom.

I live in a historical neighborhood, so I'm limited in some aspects of space and design. It must be no larger than 2 1/2 bays and must be in the New England style.

So, what are the cool things that you guys have? Please include pics!!

What I wish I did with mine was excavate out under the garage and have foundation pored same height as basement (but still separate from the basement). Then you have all the room under the garage for the messy stuff. Maybe even a open area (like oil change place) to work on the underside of the car.

...so that's what my car used to look like

Weird timing you have, my friend. My girl and I were up until late last night applying epoxy paint to the garage floor.

We are almost finished with the garage; and while it’s not in New England style in the least, here’s what we’ve done: 2-inch red stripe on the walls all the way around, with tan above and navy blue below. Deep blue epoxy floor, dressing on the attic door. After the floor paint and clear coat dries, we’ll install almond-colored vinyl baseboards.

Then the real fireworks: A large, brushed aluminum NSX logo, and in red on top of the navy blue field, a full-sized top-of-the-car silhouette to match the actual car when parked there. In the corner, a reconditioned, working, art deco stoplight like this:

On one wall, one of these:

And on another wall, one of these:

Good luck with your project, and take pics when you’re done. I’ll try to, too.

Although my garage is a small 2 car garage, my realistic goals are to add:

a. stainless steel fridge(easy find used, somewhat costly)
b. sink in the corner(maybe costly considering plumbing)
c. tile the floor with real tile, as seen in dealership service areas
c. lift(this is probably the most $ as I'd want some work done to the concrete slab to have the lift sit flush)

If you are starting from scratch meaning the foundation/floor needs to be poured think about water drainage ie iether slope the floor twords the doors or better yet slope the floors and add a large capacity drainage system so you can wash/detail the cars inside. The other thing to consider is ceiling height,if you want a lift eventualy, you should plan on greater than 9 ft.You are in ohio so I would try to finish the space as living space meaning insulation/drywall paint.Don't skimp on electrical outlets and depending on cost ac is nice but $ if you can get some windows then air flow will usualy make it tolerable. For winter there are plenty of nice wall or ceiling mount electric blower fans.

You can go to Barnes and Nobles and you can find a book about building a garage. You can probably find it all on the net also, basically talked about the wiring you will need done and other stuff. Personally if I had the money I would probably have my ceilings higher and put a lift, or would have a pit built in.

I saw one guy have his roof raised, and put a loft where the attic was, put a lift in the garage, and used the loft to store parts. And he just had a basic work bench, nice box of tools and tire/wheel stand.

I too live in a historic district and had set-back/size constraints.

I'm just a working stiff, so I didn't try to do sports-based mancaves with big screen TVs and appliances. But I've done epoxy floor, lighting, lifts, etc...I've got lots of lessons learned...

I'm Tomcat on this site:
