I have a couple questions...

Everyone replaces the water pump and timing belt with the same number - good. BUT...

1) Some people replace the timing belt cover, some people don't - is it required? Do people replace the gaskets instead if they keep the same cover? Larry B's description of the waster pump assembly also says "Water Pump/Timing cover set" - Does this mean it comes with a cover??
EDIT* I understand now, I have to move to the new water pump with the weep hole is a different location and switch to the different cover at the same time. My belt/water pump was previously replaced in 2002 at a dealer, does this mean I already have the new cover?**

2) My dealer wants to replace the tensioner as well, is this required?
3) The harmonic balancer is part of the 90k service but it can be done separately from the timing belt correct? You would just need to remove the accessory belts to swap that part out (and hold the crank from turning with the tool)?

I just got a dealer quote for this job (Ted at Woodfield Acura, the place to go for Chicago area NSXs) and he wants 2400 dollars to do this
1200 in parts (complete rip off) and 1100 dollars for labor. For 2400 dollars I could do many other things to my car, so I might end up doing this job myself.

I've attached a picture of the quote they gave me. Are they missing any parts or are they quoting me something I don't need?

Perhaps the master Larry B can chime in?

Thanks!!

OK, a few comments:

1. Notice the number I gave for the Water Pump ends in "305", this set comes with the cover, as opposed to the number in the quote which ends in A03, which is WP alone:

List Prices:

Water Pump - $379.92
Cover - $213.65
Total - $593.57

"305" Set Above - $310.17 TOTAL BOTH PARTS

(Above is current on-line pricing)

It costs over $280 more for the separate parts vs. the kit!!!!!!!

So even if you do not need the cover, Get the set and hang the cover on your wall;)

And since the car is a 1999, it came with the new cover, so you do not need it even if the job was done previously.

2. I always replace the tensioner pulley.

HTH,
LarryB

Larry, the car is a 91 though so I will buy the set with the cover and buy the grommet. I will buy a new tensioner as well.

Thanks!

If you are refering to the grommet for the timing cover for the drip tube it is also included in the kit:).

In regard to the harmonic balancer, replacement procedure is as you state. This is not part of the 90K service(or even mentioned in the service manual), but inspection is important. As you know we had a few failures of this part. I do like Dave's shield, it fits great, and will protect your engine in the case of a failure.

Hi Larry
I have had a list of parts i have been wantng to get ordered and was happy to see your note regarding the water pump. I have called and emailed oem with no reponce and also called acura wharehous who also could not confirm that the water pump kit 19200-pr7-305 is the upgraded pump and includes the cover. My original list include buying the new cover but obviosly i don wnt two covers. I even call a local deler and they didnt know either. Can you confirm if i use that part number i dont need to order the cver or gromet. Its funny we have to rely on each other and not the suppliers who are making a living of us. Had i not seen your post i would have ordered those exta parts.

Hi Larry
Another quick question. On the internet websites th valve cover gaskets show a set in the exploded view put there are only part numbers for the individual gaskets. Are you guys buying seprate gaskets as needed or is there a part number for a complete set for both banks? This is for a 92
Thanks
Rod

12030-PR7-010 VC Gasket Set

This item is the Kit with 1 VC Gasket, 3 Spark Plug Gaskets, and 6 Washers

Applicable for all year NSX's, even though Acura only shows it for 1993+ ;).

Hey Guys I am just about to order parts for a timing belt job. Looks like this is all I would need for my 91?

14400-PR7-A01 1
TimingBelt
91318-PY3-000 1 Oil Pedestal Gasket "8"
12030-PR7-010 2 VC Gasket Set
90471-580-000 2 Crush Washer 8mm
19200-PR7-305 1 Water Pump/Timing Cover Set
90401-634-000 1 Timing Bolt Cover Seal
91302-GE0-000 1 O-Ring, Dip Stick
14510-PR7-A01 1 Belt Tensioner Pulley
38920-PR7-A01 1 A/C Belt
31110-PR7-A01 1 Alternator Belt

Then as far as this part goes
13811-PR7-A02 PULLEY, CRANKSHAFT how would I know if I need this or not? I just purchased the car this past fall. It has 110k i think miles on it. Previous owner did not do this maintenance on it.

I also will throw on the cedar ridge crank damper pulley sheild as well. Do you guys think that's worth it? Also I think so far that I have seen DelRay has the best prices on all these parts? Is there a contact anyone uses that I could give a call to in the parts department?

Thanks!

Yes that is a good list. In regard to the pulley it is your choice. You can get the shield and leave the pulley or change it, your call. If it does fail in the future the shield will protect the engine. On the other hard you would get stranded if it blew, again your call:).

This is a great thread! I learned a lot.

Just incase someone else missed it 57380-SL0-J02 ABS High Pressure Hose only applies to 1991-1999. I'm not sure what the equivalent part is for 2000 and up.

There is no equivalent, not used on the 2000+ ABS system, all hoses are metal for the newer system.

Attached is a list of items from Acura of Peoria for reference, October 2018 pricing.

Can someone please advise whether I can find these items for less elsewhere? Seems like others have quoted lower pricing, but not sure if everything has gone up recently.

Also, it appears that Science of Speed is no longer carrying the Timing Belt Kit.

Hoping to buy OEM parts or their equal so as to not have to deal with this maintenance again for a while.

The shipping is free with my NSXCA membership and no sales tax.

Just trying to have reference for this purchase as well as for future parts purchases. Perhaps this might help others as well who are considering the same servicing in the near future.

Your help is greatly appreciated

Within a couple of $, your parts prices look to be the current prices at the discount parts dealers.

Just out of curiosity and because I have to deal with this next year or the year after at the latest, I checked on the water pump prices. It appears that Acura (at least Delray) has sussed out the pricing discrepancy between 19200-PR7-305 and 19200-PR7-A03 parts. A03 is now about $7 cheaper than 305, so unless you need or just want the extra parts it is no longer cheaper to buy the upgrade kit.

Not discussed in this thread is another important item to check- the timing belt cover gaskets. On many NSXs, especially ones that have already had the TB/WP service, these gaskets may be pinched or missing completely (they fall out of the covers and the tech forgets to put them back in during reassembly). These gaskets are expensive, but critical for keeping debris and moisture out of the timing belt cavity.

Thanks for providing the definitive list of parts needed. Can anyone confirm whether this gasket, by quite a margin the most expensive of the bunch, is included in kit 305?

Also, wouldn't the crankshaft seal be worth changing while in there? Part number 91212-PR7-A01.
