If you're hands-on and feel like it, I can tell you how to do it yourself and where to get the mesh in any flavor you like...

Okay, tell me how and where - so long as I don't have to go to the Home Depot in beautiful downtown Heidelberg! I am particularly interested in how the edge is trimmed. I am thinking something like 1/4" or 1/2" clear vinyl tubing from an aquarium shop.

:-) Well, if you come to Heidelberg, we could hit the autobahn!

I ordered my mesh from mcmaster.com and got the following:
1 EA 9305T52 - Aluminum Expanded $25.32 EA $25.32 in the morning
Metal Flattened Mesh, 1/2" Size,
.060" O'all Thk, 2'X 2'

that's 2' x 2'... The nice thing about this is that you can get it any way you want it, and I chose something thicker and sturdier than the rain gutter mesh. They package it well and send it right to you. It's a bit tougher to cut, but once you get it right it's not going anywhere, won't bend, etc...

For the side vents, you just need to take the vents out (see the link above) and trim two pieces (symmetric but reversed so that they look the same on either side of the car) and epoxy them to the back of the vents where the original plastic ones were.

Up front is a bit harder. I took my front bumper off and that made it a lot easier. I didn't use any border, because a.) I didn't have anything that looked just right and b.) since I was working from behind the bumper I didn't need it and the edges don't really show. If you don't want to go through all of that, then you can measure, make some cardboard templates, measure some more, trim, etc until you get the right size and shape, then cut your mesh. If you want rubber or plastic trim, you can do a Google on "rubber trim" or "rubber gasket" and you'll find all kinds of stuff...

Now, if someone will tell me how to post pictures, I'll run down and take a couple!

Holy cow! I normally complain about the shipping rates from mcmaster and I live within 300 miles of their closest warehouse. How much does it cost to send a 2ft x 2ft square package like that to germany!??!

Actually, where they're "shipping" it to is just New York... After that the military postal system picks it up and brings it like regular mail... It can't have been more than $5... If you want it via Priority mail, it won't be more than $10... But that's not FedEx or UPS, it's the US Postal rate...

OK, let me give the pictures a try... First time for everything. Here's the driver's side vent. Hopefully you can see how thick the mesh is...

Wow, it sounds like the military postal system is a real money saver! Do they have any restrictions or can you send just about anything?

(still working the picture insertion thing here...)

Here's the driver's side oil cooler intake... Note that the mesh is just "tucked in" under the deflector, then bent forwards to the same plane as the center radiator mesh so that it all looks parallel. It's held down only by the clamping of the deflector, but since it's rigid, it stays put. This allowed me to not go crazy over creating an insert with such a weird shape...

And here is a view from the front left corner... Sorry for the quality of the pictures. Black car in the shade, subject in shadow. Hopefully this shows that the mesh is quite a bit thicker than the gutter stuff. (no pun intended) If the size of the holes looks large this close, they don't from 10ft away.

Excuse the half-a** washer, haven't gotten back in there to do something neat. Anyone with ready access to a hardware store can grab something better.

Removing the bumper worked since I had to fix some of the plastic belly pan under the car between the bumper and radiator. It's a good exercise for anyone who likes to get their hands dirty and there is room for the mesh cleanly between the bumper and the intake frame around the radiator. Cutouts in this center mesh will be for the lateral posts that keep the two halves of the bumper together, the corners (so you can get at the bolts holding the bumper on) and one behind the license plate for the temp sensor.

Once the mesh is trimmed, it fits very neatly into the back side of the bumper, where it can be held on with clips to the bottom portion of the spoiler and a couple of small bolts from the front on the top side where there were two holes, I'm guessing for driving lights. Again, since it's rigid, it stays flat and doesn't bend or twist, which avoids (in my opinion) that cheesy "I did it myself last night" look. It also DOES gather every leaf and candy wrapper on the road and keep it from getting stuck in front of the radiator.

Well..... Yes and no. Basically you pay mail or shipping rates to NY from wherever it's coming from. After that the military system can be very slow... I just waited two weeks for a priority box from SC, which is unacceptable. I've waited longer. I've had things arrive in 4 days, as well. You never know, and it was really bad after 9/11... Stuff took forever to get here.

There are size and weight restrictions for APO addresses, boxes have to be under 105" length + girth, and weigh < 70 lbs... Sometimes that's a bummer, but usually not...

Why, you thinking of enlisting? :-)

I'm a civilian employee, btw!

Thanks, Don. That was very helpful.

I like the stainless steel mesh with rounded wire, like on the Jaguar XJR. IMO that looks very cool. And, I think McMaster is just the place to find it.

Don...great photos and greater mod!

Could you please walk me through the install including how to remove the front bumper???
