new FREE product: email, email analytics, social networking

Watch out for this one. I had a client install it; didn't like it, and it was a bitch and a half to get it off her system. I was almost ready to classify it as spyware.

Can you please elaborate? What made it so hard to take off?

There was no easy uninstall, either through the program itself or through Add/Remove Programs (despite what their website says). The program did not have a specific folder in Program Files to delete. It seemed to have littered itself about the system, and I had to manually track down each of its files and delete them, plus cleaning out the registry manually. I'm not even sure I got them all, but the program stopped coming up in Outlook, and the user was satisfied.

In hindsight, I should probably have just done a system restore to a restore point prior to when it was installed.

wow! mossberg didn't mention an uninstall issue (strange in itself), so great to have the feedback.

Good to hear the feedback on this. We could have all been STUNG if we installed it.

Re: doh

Indeed. Although, it is too bad about the software removal issues... Out of all the Outlook add-ons, this thing definitely looked like the bee's knees.

Yeah. This would have been a HONEY of an installation.

I would really like to hear more about this application unless you folks think we shouldn't DRONE on about it.

This DOES look awesome, I've been googling around and haven't seen anyone mention an uninstall issue, but this could be bad, Outlook is already slow enough as it is (quad processor overclocked Q6600 G0 w/4gig memory), and like this guy, mine goes back 3 years or so.

Xobni making your computer run slow? Uninstall!
Xobni is a Outlook add-in that allows you to view data about your email in new ways. When you are viewing an email, the sidebar inside the outlook window shows you all kinds of useful information such as:
-all email sent to/received from that person
-all files exchanged with that person via email
-a graph of the time of day that you get email from that person
-people linked to that person (cc'd in an email)
-information about how often you email with that person

All of this is great stuff.....if you want to know the information. I personally have very little need for any of this information. The only thing that is even remotely useful is the 'files exchanged' function. However this can be displayed by sorting your email by person and then by attached files.

All of this functionality comes at a great price. My outlook was SEVERELY slow almost to the point of non-usability. Probably due to the fact that I have 4 years+ of business email that it is working with, and I wouldn't call myself a heavy emailer. If Xobni can't deal with even a modest amount of email, then it will probably fail.

I un-installed today after running the program for several weeks. Presto!, no more slowness!

Rob,

Thanks for your insight and experience with this. It's good to get the latest BUZZ from people like you from a non-tech guy like myself.

Doug, I know ZERO about this product, I'm reading up on it now simply because it looks so cool, but the more I'm reading, the more dissatisfied users I'm finding.

I'm reading through the page below now and have yet to find one happy user. Granted, the people who don't like something are always more vocal, but there are ALWAYS some supporters out there. Just found 1... 1 single positive review in this thread.

http://gigaom.com/2008/05/11/xobni-our-path-from-wrong-product-to-killer-app/

For me, all the comments about it being a performance killer are the big turn off.

I tried this out today and in my short time using it, I did not notice a significant degradation of performance on my development machine (quad core, 4 GB) with about 2 GB worth of Outlook .pst files indexed. Although I'm not sure how useful the info Xobni presents will prove to be, I at least initially found it seems to speed up certain tasks, such as finding coworkers of given person or locating attachments.

That said, there does appear to be a swarm of negative responses amongst others who've given it a try.

Well, if there is such a SWARM of discontent with it, I am certaintly glad I didn't download it.

It looks like there is a real BEEHIVE of disgruntal users so far.

I forgot to mention, one novel feature is the facebook integration which brings facebook profile info about any contact into the sidebar. It seems cool at first, but I'm not sure I really want my facebook info so easily accessible within my coworker's Outlook. The way I look at it, that sort of stuff is not really any of their beeswax.

Now please understand, I am not a tech type guy, but the way Bob explained it, the application seems to spread through your system and put a real HONEYCOME type of application on your system. It's so much so that you need to erase each file. Is that correct?

I saw that too. It first thought I could download this and I would really be SMOKING, but then the drawbacks you mentioned brought me to a different conclusion.

Based on what I've read here, it seems like these analytics would be useful for a third party who was investigating someone - not particularly useful to the actual subject though.

Uhm, might bright the SWAT team FLYING through the screen door?

Based on the reviews I've read here, I'll bee damned if I would bee inclined to use this application.

That was my experience. Others MMV; I'm just providing one datapoint.
