WASHINGTON (AP) -- Scientists say they are a step closer to developing materials that could render people and objects invisible.

Researchers have demonstrated for the first time they were able to cloak three-dimensional objects using artificially engineered materials that redirect light around the objects.

Previously, they only have been able to cloak very thin two-dimensional objects.

The findings, by scientists at the University of California, Berkeley, are to be released later this week in the journals Nature and Science.

The new work moves scientists a step closer to hiding people and objects from visible light, which could have broad applications, including military ones.

People can see objects because they scatter the light that strikes them, reflecting some of it back to the eye.

Cloaking uses materials, known as metamaterials, to deflect radar, light or other waves around an object.

Metamaterials are mixtures of metal and circuit board materials such as ceramic, Teflon or fibre composite

Forget vinyl. I'm going to wrap my car in this so I can drive in the car pool lane!

Cheerleaders locker room run!! :eek::biggrin:

I thought this tech was already pretty much developed by the Japanese. I saw this pic a long time ago.

Or maybe its a differnt type of tech with the same results.

Now how would that work? It's one thing to reflect light to make something "seem" invisible, but how do you make it transparent?

The pic above is nsxrunner walking proudly into the girls locker room,,,,,,,,dohy! busted!

its not really transparent...........that would be amazing.......

If I recall correctly (its been a long time) the jacket the guy is wearing has a camera in it and the image behind him is been shown on the jacket so that it appears the jacket makes the man tranpsarent. But actually your just seen what is behind him.

Its not pefect but if you were hiding something and somone didn't expect it they may not notice.

Anyway the tech is probably better now and I would love to see a pic of the new stuff.

Someone should tell him that if he truely is invisible, there is no need for a poncho.

The poncho was so I didn't get wet. Some of the ladies splashed around a little too much.:biggrin:

Well, splash 'em back! I wonder, can you make a video camera invisible too?

Funny thing is this exact story was just on the abc evening news:cool:They did the Harry Potter simile, but alas no girls locker room reference.
