NY passes aftermarket muffler ban.

Oof. As one who loves the sound of exhaust I get this. In the Netherlands they have certain neighborhoods designated as "quiet" neighborhoods and you can only drive bicycles or electric vehicles through.

In my neighborhood they just banned gas powered lawn equipment for certain seasons in the year. I guess people got tired of hearing gas powered leaf blowers while working from home.

I have no problem with people making minor mods on their exhaust systems to give the car a little bit of a "throaty growl", but some people think that if a little is good, then a LOT must better and turn their cars into a complete nuisance. No, junior, just because you can put a coffee-can, loud exhaust on your Civic, it doesn't turn it into a Ferrari FXXK. I'd like to see them crack down on motorcycles, too, especially Harleys and other "if it's slow, at least I'll make it noisy" types.

I'd love to see them ban leaf blowers where I live in suburban Chicago. More of a noise menace than all of the loud cars around here, combined.

As a charter member of the “hear me before you see me” club, this really sucks. Then again, I don’t abuse the privilege by making my car sound like it’s a machine gun…which is likely the noise the law is going after, and which is the current exciting exhaust trend for young people.

Unfortunately, guys like me who just want a growlier exhaust I can hear in the cabin, would be caught up in the enforcement.

In short, I’m glad I live in Ohio.

I almost don't want to type this, I concur. All noise should be limited to designated times and places. I hate loud exhausts at low speeds.

My days off are Wednesday and Sunday. I wait all week, all week to veg out by the pool. Without fail, 5 minutes after I sit down the lawn maintenance symphony begins. Drives me insane! I swear my neighbor sees I'm having company on a sunday and will start the powerwashing for the day.

that's why I live on 9 acres...

Not fair! I thinking I'm getting old and cranky

not at all...when humans live in close proximity/densely populated areas...they take out their frustration upon each other...sometimes unconsciously..

I am definitely old and cranky, and I totally HATE loud exhausts, no matter what they are on. My car came with a Taitec muffler (sic) installed, but also the minty oem exhaust. I reinstalled the stock muffler, and now Prime member John Wayne is bothering folks all around the country with that loud Taitec non-muffler.

I am not a huge South Park fan, but I think they have a couple great episodes, including "You have zero friends" (about Facebook), and "The F word," which is about inconsiderate, clueless, and moronic Harley riders with no mufflers.

Not available online right now, but here's a synopsis

Motorcycle riders run loud pipes because people are to busy checking there F Book panic porn then actually paying attention and driving. Loud pipes save lives.

I stand corrected. But you should seek some help you got bigger problems if you feel the need to kill people over an exhaust note.

On topic the law was created due to the popularity of tuning for 2Step or Anti Lag on turbo setups. Outside the city I don’t see this being enforced outside of adding extra charges when they catch people doing stupid stuff. There is already a law for tuning and aftermarket exhausts that they don’t enforce. NYC requires smog testing so they are already skirting that law. Good luck holding the shops accountable it’s for “off road use only”. It’s nothing more then another feel good law so political figures can grand stand like they are actually doing something.
