OK, here's the question everyone "might want to know."

I have 2 sets of stock 91 wheels. I finally found some time putting them on scale. I can tell you the stock chrome rims are not that much heavier than the clear coat one...

Stock 91 Chrome with tires that have over 75% tread.
Fr: 41 lbs. R: 51

Stock with tires that only have less than 20% tread.
Fr: 39.5 lbs. R: 48.5

So now I can be sure that the Chrome rims are heavy but not that much heavier. :D

PS. My Scale had been sitting in the bathroom for couple years, so it's not calibrate to the exact measurement. So, if you happened to put the wheels on your scale, it could show a little higher/ lower weight.
 
if that's the case, I guessed there's no reason for people who want to stay away from the Chrome wheels then??

Then why would people always said bad things about them.. like big heavy wheels, that heavy fat chrome wheels...etc??

I personally like the ease of cleaning of chrome wheels, it should made a good track wheel then...
 
I believe that the extra weight that people are speaking of comes from the fact that chrome wheels are just cast wheels that are covered with a few microns of chrome plating.

Cast wheels are heavy by themselves; the weight of the chrome plating couldn't be more than a few ounces.

People probably complain about chrome wheels cause for the $$$$, you can nearly get forged wheels, which are much lighter...............and the chrome will eventually chip off and look horrid!! :eek:

Chrome is just a superficial coating layer. What's underneath the chrome is what makes or breaks the weight ! The only complaint I've ever been exposed to about chrome wheels, is that the tires beads might slip easier on a chromed wheel than they would on a non-chromed wheel, making the tire completely out of balance after a few hards stops or even wheelspins...

absolutely correct although you could have two tires with exact dimension and size, and tire tread left and have 2-4 lbs difference (not all tires are created equal, and some weight more than others in similar dimension)
