Wow! I just saw the stickied post about the new double din unit and this thing looks fabulous!! The msrp is only
1k! I cant figure out if navigation is included in this unit or if it's extra. Anyone know?

The feature i like most about that unit which was not mentioned is the bluetooth audio playback. Now I can use my PDA and pair it via BT and listen to songs without having to plug anything in. I have the D2 now, and that is one thing I was hoping would emerge in the next gen players.

It sounds like a great product, with all the functions at a great price point. I wonder how it would compare with the Z1, as this is one I have been considering. I know the Z1 has the HDD which sets it apart from the D3, as well as the price difference, but does the D3 have any new functions that the Z1 does not? I have found on the internet that you can find some Z1's for reasonable prices now. The price ranges from $1300 to $1700 (at the local Fry's) for the Z1, so there are some nice choices to choose from.

Thanks.

I like the D3 but one big drawback is you have to remove your CD or DVD to pop in your Navi disc to navigate. Once you fix your route, you can eject the navi disc and pop the CD or DVD back so its not a super big deal but it can get annoying.

But not if youre running music from your iPod right?

If you assume that ppl are not carting around CDs anymore, and that while theyre driving (where they want NAV) theyre also not watching a movie, we are good with this right?

This looks like something I need!

I was going to get the Z1... but now I have to re think this.. because of the improved iPod functions.. the money I save getting this I can buy myself a video iPod and still come in cheaper than the Z1... hmmmm...

But it doesn't have voice commands... I'm all into the voice command stuff.

If it had voice commands I'd be interested, looks nice though especially for the price.

Are you saying there are no voice commands for the nav or for other functions? no voice for nav would suck.

Does it come with Nav built in? Or, do we have to pay for a seperate module?

There is no hard drive for the D3, which unfortunately means there will be use of a DVD navi disc with only one optical drive. This is why I like my D2 right now, or I would throw in a little extra cash for the Z1. My guess is that they are working on a Z2 right now which is why they didn't want to put too many features on the D3. The only reason why I would choose the D3 at this point is the lower price point as well as the newer look; I also really like the ability to stream audio via bluetooth.

If you have a cd changer, then you could just leave the navi disk inside, and still listen to cd's and use the nav at the same time, correct?

One option....

Kenwood G510, (Garmin) with Navpod. Garmin GPS/DVD player/RGB hook up,(Dig movie cam & DVD player) /backup cam/XM radio with traffic and weather, etc. LZ-702 Touchscreen.
Mem card, no DVD req for nav, all US on card. Can nav and change to DVD,radio, etc.
Well under $1000

the D3 is a standalone unit..... it's not just a screen.

i dont' like how it looks though - Z1 all the way. don't go cheap on the nsx

i have an N1 right now in my civic.... there are definitely problems with it (design-wise)..
- FF & REW are slow as piss
- have to remove the nav disc to play cds/ mp3 cds...
- HATE the fold up screen, but that's all they had back in the day.
- no music visualization
- new software requires you to be stopped to look stuff up
- crappy interface for cd/mp3 nplayback

everything it was designed for works well though... it's surprising some of the POIs are in there (and some that aren't), but that's kinda the same for any nav system -it won't have everything and it won't be completely up to date.

i'm thinking about selling the N1 and getting a D3 for the civic... and i'd like to eventually get a Z1 for the nsx

Here is what I know about the differences between the D3 and Z1. The D3 has a better Ipod interface. Searching and scrolling is alot faster. The Z1 still needs the interface unit. The D3 has it built in. You can change lighting of the buttons to anything on the D3. The Z1 uses the hard drive to store map data. Because of this it can store more data and access it faster than the DVD data discs for the D3. The Navigation is more accurate with the Z1, and it uses voice commands, and can search by phone number if listed in Yellow Pages. Address search will work while driving with the Z1 (because of voice commands), But the D3 will be locked out like the earlier D1 and D2. D1 and 2 users can do a bypass trick, but this wont work on the D3. I think the voice commands work as well with Ipod control and can search titles by simply saying the name. ( I'm not 100% on this - it is either the D3 or Z1 that can do this. I have to reconfirm with Pioneer). Both have bluetooth. The Z1 can dial numbers by voice command, I'm not sure with the D3.
There will be a Z2 soon to be released, maybe around March.
