Problem with Cruise Control Not Setting

I've had my 94 NSX for 18 months with now about 41,000 miles. Since I bought it, I've had trouble setting the Cruise Control. I have the "on/off switch" on the left side of the steering column turned on. But when I push the set button on the steering wheel, frequently nothing happens. Typically at the beginning of a 4 hour trip it works fine for a while then it won't set unless I push it many times. Recently I made a 1500 mile trip over a few days and it worked surprisingly well. I thought that perhaps the switch had been corroded but was cleaned by use. Alas now it most often doesn't work - won't set 90% of the time.

What do you think - corrosion of the contacts? Is it difficult to take apart and clean the contacts? Thanks,,,Bill

I would check the switches on the brake and clutch for proper operation and adjustment.

Can you elaborate? Why do you make this suggestion? Thanks for the input.

This question may be funny for americans but not for us german autobahn users: Did you try to engage cruise control at a very high speed? At least my last 2 NSXs didn't accept cruise control settings above 200 km/h here in Germany.

The more serious part of the answer: Check the buttons itself and the control under the front hood.

There is a switch that hits the clutch petal arm when it is all the way up so when to depress the clutch it disengages the cruise control. As for the brake I think the cruise control just picks up a signal off the brake light switch but I would have to check the manual on that.

200 km/h = ~ 120 miles per hour. Well in a word: NO! Initially I thought that might be an issue as I was trying to set it for 80 MPH which is above the 70 MPH speed limits that we have here in the Southeast. Occasionally it will set at 78 MPH. I don't know the limit for certain since my NSX obviously has a problem but I suspect that in the states NSXs won't set above 80 MPH. Others can comment on that. Thanks for your suggestions.

when it doesn't set try pulling the brake pedal up with your foot and at the same time push the set button. if the cruise sets replace the brake switch. Your probably loosing the signal from the gray wire at the switch to the control unit. The most common cruise failure on acura's is the brake switch.

nsx-tech Thanks for the suggetion. I will give that a try. I appreciate your help.
