Problems with Server Upgrade...

Rather than list complaints with all the compliments, i'd just record some probz i've observed already... then other people can disagree with me:

* Pictures in signatures (now i know why Lud never implimented them previously) ... they can be huge, distracting and slow down page-load times. This is already a problem on many other webforums. i can see this becoming a big problem here too unless there is a way to prevent it or we have a gentleman's agreement between all users.

* white space at sides is nice but kinda wasted.

* We're still using the same old smilies for the Message Icons (Lud; if i fix the transparency on some will you update them???)

* Email notification by default... won't this flood the server with additional workload?

* NSXTASY's post count is till too high... wasn't that meant to be "taken care of" ;)

otherwise, don't want to sound ungrateful... great upgrade Lud!

WHY DIDN'T ANYONE TELL ME THE FORUMS LINK HAD CHANGED!!!

I had bookmarked the old link and was sitting next to my PC checking the page constantly. It kept giving an "Internal Server Error" so I assumed the update was still in process. It wasn't till Neo emailed me that I realized the system was up and the link had changed!

* I didn't realize the avatar pics would be lost (left my old one at home, will have to update it tonight).

* nsxtasy: your avatar reverted back to the old grainy one! Where's the updated (smooth) one that you had before??

Still getting used to all the new features...

I agree with this - its quite redundant since we already have avatars

I have yet to receive an e-mail notification, even though it's selected in my profile - something wrong with system or just me??

e-mail notification is working. However... I suspect you might misunderstand how it works? When you select it in your profile, all that is, is a default. If you say yes, then when you post, it automatically checks the box labeled, "Email Notification: emails sent to you whenever someone replies. Only registered users are eligible." That's the ONLY thing that parameter controls, and it won't notify you unless you actually post a reply to a thread. (And if it's not doing that, you may also want to check the e-mail address in your profile to make sure it's correct.)

The software does not otherwise send you a notification unless you subscribe to a topic and that topic is updated. (You can do that by viewing the topic and clicking "Subscribe to this thread").

Hmm .... yes, the email notification box is checked as a default & it appears when I use this reply as a test - that feature is selectable from the profile options.

What do you mean by this - that to me reads that when you post a reply (or receive a reply) it will e-mail you?

I also have the e-mail notification for private message selected & when we exchanged pm's, I got the pop-up from Prime, but no e-mail.
I have double & triple checked my e-mail address in the profile - very strange .....

I've already turned off images in signatures. No change in policy there, it was just on by default.

Yes if you update the smilies I'll update them on the server. E-mail them to me.

I may tinker with the formatting a bit. I still need to add the header and footer to each page too.

I'll look into the e-mail notification thing.

Dont turn off the email notification, maybe just default it to "no" and let the memebers choose if the want it or not.

I increased the width from 95% to 99%.

Much more efficient use of space!

Your response to these suggestions is as impressive as the new capability, Lud
- you must feel like proud new Poppa! :D

Lud, there appears to be more to it than just the notification of post replies - I tested the e-mail feature by attempting to send one to myself - so far, 6 hrs later, nothing in my e-mail in-box.
Not complaining, just want to give more input regarding a possible problem.

I have all Messaging & Notification options set to "no" with the exception of hide email address, which is "yes".

I keep getting email that others have posted to the same thread.

snapper: if you hide your email address, there is no button on the page to email you! The new software never shows our email addresses, so even if you set the "hide email address" option to no it will not reveal your actual email address. It just allows people to email you via the Prime's messaging system (once Lud and ComputerWiz get it to work that is ;) ).

I'm confused.

It seems like, regardless of whether a member "hides email address" or not, you can't find out his e-mail address any more. And, regardless of whether he "hides email address" or not, you can still send him an e-mail - which doesn't actually show you his e-mail address.

Is this correct? And, if so, what difference does the "hide email address" option make?

Roger that PHOEN$X.

My point is all messaging is set to no, and I keep getting email about other posts.
Not a desired feature for me.

Ken, the only thing the "hide email address" option does is display/hide the little email button (see pic) on your posts. This does not affect the new PM ability that vBulletin offers (that is controlled by the "Enable Private Messaging?" option, which will show/hide the pm button). I should've been more clear and said the "hide email address" option allows people to email you through Prime's email (not messaging) system--once Lud/ComputerWiz get it to work.

snapper: it sounds like the controls are criss-crossed then (i.e., "no email" results in emails sent, and "send email" results in no emails). Just one of those bugs that makes all these software upgrades fun fun fun. ;)

A few comments:

1. There is a very small hack that can be installed, that lets admins restrict signature photo and text size.

2. I'd recommend the 'Quick Reply Box', which puts a generic reply box at the bottom of every single thread, so users can just type their reply in it, and click submit, without having to click 'Post Reply', thereby greatly reducing bandwidth. On my 4 vBulletin sites, I noticed a 15% decrease in bandwidth, when adding the Quick Reply Box.

3. Add more smilies. They are tremendously popular, and take up little or no bandwidth.

4. Let me know if you need a button set (
top_profile.gif
) that matches the red theme. I have hundreds of red sets.

Lud, there is an option in the admin control panel, that allows you to 'hide members email addresses'. If you set this to yes, it will be up to the members to individually hide their own email address, if they so choose, from the 'User CP', under 'Edit Options'.

Clock/Time problems

Lud, you need to have the time in the Admin Control Panel set to the time zone in which your server is located, and not your home time zone. Once you do this, and everyone has their personal time zone set to their home setting, their clocks will appear correctly. This is VERY important, as the timestamps for each new posts, are driven off of the information from the server timezone and your personal timezone settings. This determines what new posts have been added since your last visit. If the time is off an hour, you could miss a whole hour (or more) of new posts if you return to the site and click 'View New Posts since your last visit'. So to everyone who found that even by setting your personal timezone correctly, and its still an hour off, wait until Lud fixes the Admin CP timezone, and yours will appear correct.

Notes for NSXnBRLA

Some good suggestions... here's my comments

1. I think Lud should prevent pictures from signatures completely - regardless of size. They just add noise and waste bandwidth. As D'Ecosse pointed out, we already have customized avatars (which are far better IMHO).

2. I'd agree, a Quick-Reply box would be REALLY nice... i'd certainly use it. Though lets see what Lud & Mr.Wiz think (they probably already have enough to fix up at the moment)

3. More smilies; i already tried encouraging this idea a few months ago and got a lukewarm reaction. The current range we have is okay... and Lud doesn't forbid us from inserting occassional smilies from other sites.

4. Personally i'd love to see a silver button set... matches the "NSX" letters & grey sections of the forums. There is such a thing as "too much red" (except at an NSXPO :D)

5. Clock/Time problems -- i've noticed this too... i'm 1hr behind, although we just finished Daylight Saving last weekend.

TERRIFIC JOB LUD/Mr.WIZ... Hope we dont sound like we're complaining.... :(

i noticed we only have three smilies to select from now (the rest in a pop-up window)... or is this a glitch my end?

Did admin do this to reduce pictures on the post page or to reduce the usage on smilies? (both valid reasons)

Holy cow, let me try to respond to all the new issues.

1. Server Time Zone - Thanks for pointing that out NSXnBRLA, I will fix it today.

2. Hide/Unhide e-mail - I purposefully disabled the system from showing people's e-mails until people have a chance to set their privacy options (I'll give it a week or two). The system defaulted to showing all e-mail addresses and I know many people do not want this because they use their work e-mail since I have hotmail, yahoo, etc. blocked. So right now if you have your e-mail enabled, people have to fill out a form to e-mail you.

3. E-mail working / not working - Will look into it more today. The "Email Notification" option works for me from the limited testing I have done. I'll try the rest of it and see what's going on.

4. NSXnBRLA - If you let me know where to pick up the quick reply hack I'll check it out. Sounds interesting!

5. The policy is no images in signatures, so we don't need to worry about limiting the size, etc. As others have pointed out, they waste a ton of screen space and we already have avatars.

6. I may add more smilies later but it's a pretty low priority. I have seen too many forums that have as many smilies as sentences in most posts and I'm not looking for that here.

7. Still tinkering with color schemes. I went to red on the old forums so that was partly carried over here for now. Open to suggestions. If people like red, I'd love to get a red button set NSXnBRLA.

Thanks for all the comments and offers to help! We'll get everything sorted out as we go along.

I dunno about the others, but I rather like this setup! What happens if you enable the system to show people's emails? If we set it to hide, will people still be able to email us through the forms? (That is of course, if we can get #3 working. I still have not received any emails from Prime, however my subscribed threads do show up in my CP if there are new replies.)
