Cross-posting from other (non-NSX) forums -- wanted to find if there was any similar experience with these tires.

NSX content: I run T1-S PROXES on my NSX, for street and track use.

##################

Had a close call with the 18" TOYO T1-S Proxes on my daily driver (93 Benz W124 coupe).

Setup: Running a +3 18/18 fitment using 18-225-40 TOYO T1-S Proxes
- nominal tire pressures 34 F / 37 R
- approx tire mileage < 14000 miles

While running on a Interstate I-94 this weekend, had an incident with the LEFT FRONT (driver side) tire.

A section of tread (about 1/2 wide) had separated from the tire, just about where the sidewall and the main tread intersect. Tire did not fail, no pressure loss (we have SmartTire tire management system)... the "flapping" section caused a loud sound, which alerted us to the problem.

Section that separated was pretty deep -- inner (steel?) fibers were exposed and tread was beginning to separate from the sidewall.

As far as we can tell, there were no punctures or obvious perforations on the sidewall. It looks like tire failure, possibly due to a manufacturing/fabrication problem. Tire was correctly inflated, with no significant pressure or temperature variance.

Has anyone else encountered problems with TOYO T1-S Proxes ?

i had a set on my Audi S4, i like it alot. no problem at all.
I have S-03 on another set of wheels, and they have very simular grip on dry/wet, the S-03 has more low speed steering feed back, T-1S offer slightly more comfort.

Here are mine. I had them on my now sold Integra Turbo. They did have wear on the inside due to the 2" drop, but no threads were showing. After work one day I did my usual 0-100 on ramp run. I got up to the highway and started merging over to pass a car at the top of the ramp when "whack whack whack whack" my tire lost a full revolution down to the steel about 3/8" wide (as seen in the pics) I took them off the car that day and have never been used again. ???????? Granted they were getting thin, but so are shaved Speed Cup tires from the last few years? Who knows?

I ran 2 sets and initially liked them a lot with great corning grip but as they got older they became noisy and the rubber got hard and lost a lot of traction.
Didn't get a 3rd set.

Two pix of the damaged/failed tire. The strip of rubber below the first picture is the piece that separated from the tire.

TOYO response pending

What did Toyo customer service say when you contacted them to ask about it?
They mentioned that they had not encountered problems with the T1-S PROXES. They want me to bring the wheel to a local dealer (Cassidy Tire in Chicago), and have them call TOYO with me there.

As far as we know (was not in the vehicle when it happened):
- tire was correctly inflated
- no abnormal pressure or temp situation
- road was NOT rough -- no detectable debris that caused a puncture
- no loss of pressure AFTER the strip was removed by the emergency roadside service tech (INdiana I94).

I'll post more info here once I get more info from TOYO.

It does look like you hit some part of the fender or suspension part... this doesn't look like a tire failure by manufacturing... but by punture / scraping.
Not per driver recount (I was not there where it happened).

I've been running this suspension/wheel/tire setup since mid-1999, and rubbing/hitting on the fronts has never been a problem.

Just had another discussion with the Toyo folks. They want to study this further, and want me to demount and send them BOTH front tires.

Once they receive them, they will send me 2 NEW tires, in replacement.

GREAT to see a vendor standing behind their product.

Free doughnuts....Homer would be pleased. Glad everyone was ok and Toyo is actively persuing this. I feel better about them already!

New donuts arrived 11/18

Tires were demounted on 17-OCT-03, and sent to Toyo -- received 27-OCT-03. They paid for all shipment.

Update: replacement T1-S PROXES tires (2) arrived TODAY (18-NOV-03).

Let me know as well

manuel. let me know the outcome. I have Toyos in the X. Mike has these when I purchased. I wouldn't want to go with same experience as you while driving the X.

-thanks,
Val
