I updated my US PSP to the new Japanese firmware and thus far am impressed. Still not perfect...could really use a keyboard, but the built-in browser does a decent job...better than the Wipeout hack! This post is from my PSP.

Well, you're screwed. You weren't supposed to update to the 2.0.

Planning on buying one in the next couple of days. Looks llike sonme nice package deals from ebay. Should i get one from best buy or ebay. Which version, and how do you download them to the psp? Why are the headphone things ipod white? Any suggestions on price or must have options?

So I just got my PSP with the 1.51 firmware. I mostly bought it just for the games and movies, but I do want to open up the hidden web browser and use one of those movie conversions to view movies. Can I do that with this one? Why does everyone really want the 1.50 one?

Hackers cracked 1.0 and 1.5, so people have been running homebrew apps on it for quite some time now. Mostly emulators for older game systems and a few other interesting developments, but nothing major just yet.

I foolishly upgraded to 1.51 when it was initially posted (before the 1.50 exploit became available), so I haven't been able to try any of these homebrew apps on my own PSP (I know many who will never update their 1.50 PSPs, and they have gigs of cool stuff they run on their PSPs). Since I had already upgraded past the exploit, I figured I'd rather have the new features of the 2.0 udpate than wait for someone to FINALLY post a downgrader.

I suspect more effort will be placed into hacking 2.0 than there will be in downgrading to 1.5. The MP4 AVC and Web browsing features alone are worth having.

The U.S. version of 2.0 still hasn't been posted.

Sound's good. I'm not too much into hard core gaming so I'llprobably not worry about homebrew games. All I really want to do is play some of the good games out there now, and be able to log somewhat surf the net. I think I'll probably wait for the US 2.0 upgrade though since it supposed to come out soon. I just bought mine a few days ago so I don't want to risk loosing any warranty right now.

Hey guys. So I now have my USA 2.0 update installed successfully. I just need to test it out on a wireless network later. One unrelated question. What DVD to PSP MP4 coversion softwares are you guys using or recomend? Also, for your typical movie, how large is the file after conversion. The largest memory stick dual I have right now is only 512 so I was just wondering if that is enough for at least 1 movie. I'll go get a 1 gig later. Thanks.

Chris

512 is good for one short movie. you may have to compress it more than the usual.
but theres plenty of movies already ripped into mpeg/mp4.
i use image converter.

id get the 2gb later since prices are dropping rapidly. its about under 200 right now, some are about 150. if its for your PSP, dont bother getting a highspeed one if youre using your PSP to write to the mem stick duo.

it wasnt too long ago when a regular 1gb sony mem stick was like one thousand dollars.

I've been using the freeware PSP Video 9 to encode all of my MP4 video clips thus far. It works pretty well with MP4 SP videos, but I have issues with its support of MP4 AVC. I don't think they have figured out all of the quirks of Sony's implementation of the MP4 AVC/H.264 format...with the settings I'd like to use, I get annoying frame-hitches from time-to-time.

The latter is unfortunate, because you can easily get away with less than half the bitrate while maintaining simlar quality video to MP4 SP. I've encoded a 2 hr 15 minute feature film at 400x192 and it totalled around 400MB and the movie looked nearly flawless in all but the fastest action sequences. Pretty amazing! The only tradeoff with PSP Video 9 is that you have to set a high keyframe interval to reduce the frequency of hitches.

Also note that PSP2.0's update allows you to play back odd resolution video clips yet maintain square pixels (previously, it would only stretch to full-frame clips that were encoded at anything other than 320x240). Using 400x192 is nearly perfect for 2.35:1 feature films.

Funny thing...now that the downgrader is available, I have no interest in downgrading. I use the web browser too much, and its not like homebrew stuff won't be working on 2.0 soon enough (I'm already playing that TIF Pong).
