Greetings,

I recently purchased an older set of HRE wheels. I want to have the face(or disc) of the wheel powdercoated and had a question concerning their disassembly. Is it as simple as removing all the bolts on the wheel and simply removing the face or should I have this done professionally?

regards,

Matt

get it done professionally, you certaintly dont want to play around with the structural integrety of a 3 piece rim:wink:

Aside from the nuts/bolts that hold the wheel pieces together (and they are torque'd), there is also a bead of silicone that seals them "together" so to speak. You need to have the old silicone removed and a new seal put back when you reassemble the wheels after finishing. If the seal is not done correctly, you will have an air leak. I say leave the job to the pros.

The 3 piece wheels I have taken appart in the past did not require disturbing the inner seal. I removed the valve core and deflated the tires first. This removed the force on the two halves. I then removed the center section. This is the case where the center section bolts to the outside of the 2 rim halves. You can check with the manufacturer for the torque specs.

The wheels you are describing are 2 piece wheels the hub attaches to the outer rim with bolts.
HRE wheels the hub or center if the wheel is sandwiched between the outer lip and inner rim they are then bolted threw all three pieces. You cant take them apart with the tires still on.

Take a look at a set of Forgeline wheels and you will find that the inner and outer sections are mated and sealed with silicone. The center section is then bolted to the two halves from the outside. I have purchased 6 sets of these in the past and trust me they are 3 piece wheels. The Kinesis wheels I have had were the same.

Well,

depending on how old they are...

if they are 540 series and up, you dont have to cut the silicone at all....

you will just remove the bolts (12mm rear, 5/16th 12 point fronts)

and remove the centers, sometimes tapping the center out on the back pad with a rubber mallet helps.

make sure you re-torque them properly, depending on HRE's specs.

email [email protected] and ask him for torque specs

thanks for the replies everyone,

The wheels are actually 525's so a little before the 540's. Rather than risk it im just gonna bite the bullet and take them to a local wheel refinisher.

FYI, even local wheel refinishers can get it wrong. So provide them all the info. Your better safe sounding like a smart ass know it all then a dumbass knows nothing and get a fast one pulled.

Just wanted to post an update on the wheels. Seeing as how they were an extra set I decide to go ahead and disassemble them. Turns out I was able to remove the disc(face) of the wheel without disassembling the lip from the barrel. I had the faces powdercoated satin black to match the HRE black. I also purchased a set of the optional metal etched HRE centercaps. Re-assembly was very straightforward as well, just had to torque all of the bolts to 24 ft/lbs. Will try to snap some pics of the wheels on the car this upcoming weekend. Overall I am very happy with the way the wheels came out.

regards,

Matt
