I have a few questions about registering my '96 in California.

1) What rate is charged on the value of the vehicle for out-of-state registration?

2) What value does the DMV use assess the charge?

3) Should I expect problems with the SMOG check? My '96 is 100% stock.

Any help would be appreciated!

"1) What rate is charged on the value of the vehicle for out-of-state registration?"

I just bought a 1995-T from TX and brought it to CA. Registration will cost you 1.5% of the purchase price. That calculation continues each year you own the car. They will charge you 1.5% of the value next year... don't ask me how they calculate the depreciation?? Kelley Blue Book maybe??

2) What value does the DMV use assess the charge?

See above.

3) Should I expect problems with the SMOG check? My '96 is 100% stock.

My 1995 passed with NO problem. I would not worry about. But you can look for a shop that allows you free re-tests until you pass. That was you will not pay again in the unlikely event you fail the first time.

BTW - I am in SF too. I will keep my peeled for you... what color is your car? Mine is Black.

Well I just did mine 2 weeks ago so I know the answers.

1. Rate is 1.5% (yet you will get back 43% of this fee in a refund check some surplus of money)

2. Value is determined by the bill of sale you turn into the DMV. so if you wrote $5K then you get charged 1.5% of $5K

3. Nope.. all NSX's are EPA and California Emissions. so no problem there.. (unless you go to some idiot that put my NSX as a Nissan NX.. idiot.. I failed bigtime since it was sniffing for a 4 cyl.)

now you have to get the car inspected prior to heading down to the DMV so you can either call the Police department to cruz by your pad to do an inpection or go to the door ding city of the DMV office.

and if you bought the car out of state.. you have to pay what they call Usage Tax.. aka Sales TAx.. so becarefull..
