Replacing Crankshaft Main Seal

To replace the transmission side crankshaft main seal does the oil have to be drained? Do you have to take the left side cover off. i ask this because the manual show the cover off when installing the seal. If the cover is removed how do you ensure the oil pan is sealed to the cover?
 
Thanks for the reply Larry. So this is what I did i tried to make a hole in the seal with an awl, then a drill, it felt like I was hitting something solid. So I scraped of the rubber and found a pre-existing hole, screwed in a screw and used it as a point to apply leverage, the rest was easy.
