Roger Penske buys IMS and Indy Car

29 October 2004
San Diego, CA (formerly Portland, TX)
In what must be some kind of ironic symmetry, Roger Penske bought the whole can of cheese wiz from the Hulman-George family.

I hadn't realized Ms. (Mari) Hulman-George had passed away, but I think her passing may have led the way; (possibly even requiring it in her will). The whole Tony George / CART / IndyCar ego trip has nearly ruined the sport. Mr. Penske has usually been a neutral owner, wanting to race cars, entertain fans (think the California Speedway when he owned it) and keep the spotlight away from himself (except for winning races).

As a lifelong fan of Indy Car racing and especially the 500, I'm pretty excited about it.
I've meet "The Captain" at a few races. He is always gracious and gave my son a hat last year at the Rolex 24hr. He is such a great guy.
