so, you think your online, personal info is safe...

funny you should mention this.....i just got off the phone with my father and we were talking about the same thing. he was telling me how employers are now checking social networking sites such as facebook and myspace when they are screening potential candidates. he also said that they do the same for existing employees. kinda scary. i went ahead and cleaned up my profile a bit.

e-w@ack...

SilverStone05/Edward, is that seriously true? For entry-level professional positions or higher-grade positions?

I'm just curious coz I see so many flunkies who were/are Animal House'sque / Girls-Gone-Wild / etc' types get into Fortune_500 corp's w/ ease (posh jobs/perks), and coasting towards some enviable positions. Far from being Rhode Scholars, just very sociable/trendy people. I never could fully comprehend that. And it's very evident around where I reside.

Sure is true....From what I hear, some companies screen entry level positions all the way up to executive management.

What would you find out about me if you searched the web? Just the people, and things that I like. There isn't a thing out there that I wouldn't show my Mom.

The only thing you get when you Google me is that article I wrote on the RSX for NSeXcitement back in 02...

Everything else is screen name protected, and I generally don't include a list of screen names on my resume...

Of course- Even if someone did equate me with the alias "H-carWizKid" (pretty much universal across the web)- I still have nothing to be ashamed of.

I would hope an employer would see my myspace page- it shows a healthy, well adjusted and stable person with a slightly overdeveloped addiction to VTEC! And if they knew I associated with you folks- well, I'd be pleased if they knew that too!

Of course, I am also a guy who once parenthetically referenced Ken Sax on a research paper...

Call me crazy, but I don't have a problem with it.

Philip

I actually used myspace yesterday for work. We have a fatality insurance claim involoving 3 deaths. One of them a 15 year old girl. We have her name, but not parental information. I performed a search on her name in the area that she lives and there she was. Lot's of her teenage friends were talking on their space about her death. I won't go into details, but we were able to track down some additional info from there and eventually got ahold of her parents yesterday. I even found out where and when the funeral was going to be held.

It's amazing what kind of information is out there.

Most interesting to me is I know the guy who is mentioned in the first paragraph. Jon Callas from when he was at DEC. We were involved in a MUDD on DECnet.
