Speedometer Sticking

Guys,

The new owner of my ex-91 told me that intermittently the speedometer becomes stuck at 80mph and sometimes becomes unstuck depending on speed, etc.

Now I've driven the car today myself and it does periodically stick so having searched Prime I've discovered this is a common problem with NSX's and Acura Legends...

So with this in mind I'll use contact cleaner to clean the speedometer sensor underneath the car.

Any other suggestions? No CEL lights or anything else not normal...

BrianK,

Yes, but that was years ago. Recently though the dash was removed for the interior work that was done so maybe something was rattled loose. The speedometer itself hasn't acted up until afterwards.

So everyone is clear everything else works - mileage counter, rpm cluster, lights, everything else. Only the speedometer needle is sticking...

If it would be a sensor problem you would be getting a CEL. has the face of the gauge been changed?

+1

When my vehicle speed sensor started going bad I would get CEL and a TCS light and the speedo needle would drop to zero and back. Never saw it "stick" at a particular speed.

Sounds like a mechanical issue, needle touching the face which has lifted.

Yes, I'll agree with this one. I had the same problem after I installed the white gauge faces. The gauge cluster might need taking apart again, and the double-sided tape that holds the white faces on reapplied.

I have had this problem recently as well. It happens randomly with it sticking at 20 mph or less until 50 mph or so is reached. It will also sometimes spike from 60 to 80 for no reason. As far as I know it is the original dash and I have gotten no CEL.

Your speed sensor may be getting ready to go out on you.

The sending unit for the speed sensor (which I gather is the part that tends to go bad) is ~$160 from an Acura dealership. I will be replacing mine (amongst other things) over the weekend. Similar symptoms. Speedo will occasionally flick up to actual vehicle speed, but then it drops to nothing and stays there. I see CEL & TCS light. (No idea on labor costs).
