I picked up my boss this afternoon at a performance shop, where he has having some tuning mods performed on his Hummer. Until he arrived, I was chatting with one of the techs about a yellow Viper they had in the process of being heavily massaged. The customer dropped off the car and said "When I pick it up, it is to make 1000 RWHP." The tab for this work is about $60,000 and includes an air-to-water aftercooler, twin turbos, JE pistons, Manley rods etc. When I asked, he said they tune the air-fuel ratio to be between 11.5 and 12:1. Figuring an engine like this costing that much, I asked "What do you use to manage the engine, something like a Motec." Wrong, you guessed it - they use the Split Second controller.

That is a surprise, you would think for 60k they would have found room for a stand-alone ems.

Perhaps you could teach them a thing or two on the SS:)

I too find that to be suprising. Maybe I have simply missed how many race teams use the SS equipment, only recognizing all the stand-alones used, like Motec.

Andy-

Does that particular shop have history of using the SS box for modified Vipers or was it implemented per a specific customer request?

I visited that shop last year and was talking about tuning in general. Then too, the name SS came up. I happened have my laptop with me, so I asked the guy if I could show him my maps. When the screens came up, he said that they don't look similar as to the SS screens he has seen. So perhaps, they are not using a piggy-back controller.

As far as the customer request to have a SS box, I kinda doubt it for two reasons (a) The way the story was told to me, the customer just dropped the car off and said "Make 1000 HP." So that could indicate that he doesn't care about specifics. (b) When the tech said "We use the SS controller." that tells me they use this controller on their FI'ed Vipers as standard practice. Vipers are their specialty, but they do work on other cars.

one question.

Tuning mods on a hummer? Is that so he can get his groceries faster, or so he can lug more golf clubs to the golf course? If he is the 0.000000000001% of people who take the hummer off road, then maybe i can tag along some day so he can pull me out if i get stuck.

The Split Second controller this shop uses on their forced induction engines is a piggyback NOT a standalone.

They have used AEM, but mostly SS.
