stereo goes POP-POP-POP by left foot! Help?

I thought I had lost a tire on the left front at first! Yikes! Almost had a heart attack. Well it was just the radio/CD giving out.Whew. What is the problem and fix for this loud popping electronic short sound at the left foot and comes through speaker?This is not effected by the volume or whether it is the CD or radio ,all the sound stops and is replaced by the loud popping.Sometimes I get some static there also, when the radio is O.K.but with the volume all the way down. I sure would appreciate help with this Thank- You Greg

more than likely the amps are failing... fairly common problem...
