sad thing is that he was killed by something other than a crocodile.

Yeah,

It appears that the sting-ray got him in the chest, puncuring his heart.
Now most string-ray strikes are on the ankles and lower leg from people accidentally stepping on them.

We won't know the real reason until they release the film that they were taking while filming his scene (apparently for a children's show/program).
But my guess is that after he got a sting ray to start swiming away, he chased it down and petted it and got struck or had food and gibblets on him while feeding the sting-ray and something spooked the ray and got struck.
Either way, bad juju, but this guy really tempted fate and I feel sorry for his family, but some of what he does really is irresponsible.

Yeah, that's a shame. But, as mentioned above, when you play with fire, once in awhile you get burned.

Too bad, he seemed like a pretty good guy.

Good thing he didn't take very good care of his body, blown out knees and such. Very sad he died.
