Taitec exhaust tip silencers installed - review

Hi all,

I've had the Taitec GT Lightweight Exhaust on my NSX for more than a year and although I really like the exhaust, I never really liked the volume of the exhaust. But I do like the sound (tone). And I never liked the fact that I could not hear the engine anymore.

Well, yesterday I installed the Quiet Tip Exhaust Silencers from Science of Speed and would like to report that I can hear the motor again! It is stated on the SOS that the silencers will reduce exhaust volume by about 20%. By my judgement, I think the volume reduction is more like 50%, maybe even more. The tone is still there and the exhaust still sounds great, but now I can cruise without cranking up the music and as stated before, when getting on the entrance ramps of the local highway, I can hear the wonderful sound of that perfect motor.

The exhaust now, IMHO, is perfect.
 
can you show a picture of how the silencer is installed with the exhaust? Do you need to drill holes in the exhaust or anywhere?

I am interested, but don't want to put any holes anywhere if that's what they need.

It'd be nice if you have before and after sound clips. Besides quieter, does it change the pitch at all? I hope it doesn't change in HP gain comparing with one without?

Chris from SoS, I'd love to see a dyno pull with the silencers on?

Is that easy in install? Can you see the exhaust silencers from the outside? ...I mean, if a car following you, can they tell if you had installed the silencers?
 
I have a hard time believing that by restricting the exhaust (which is how it gets more quiet) that you wouldn't see an impact on HP
 
I'm away for the moment but will post pictures of the install on Wednesday night.

The silencers can be seen but you have to be pretty much at eye level with the exhaust to get a look them. The silencers are black which make them that much more hidden. The silencers also sit back into the exhaust about six inches.

A hole must be drilled in the exhaust tip to secure the silencer. It was pretty easy although I did have to jack up the car to get my drill underneath the exhaust.

Power loss? I took the NSX for a lively jaunt around the area and could not perceive a loss of power. Although technically, there probably is a small loss (1 ~ 3 hp?). If there is a power loss, you won't feel it unless your butt is calibrated.

Pitch change? No, the pitch didn't change, just not as much of it. My wife usually hears me pull into the driveway = not any more

I guess the outlet is around a 1" diameter. That means it'll create more back pressure than without the silencers.

I heard that the correct amount of back pressure can actually help the low end torque. That's why I'd like to see a dyno comparison to see the differences.
 
My exhaust setup is so open that I can actually feel the loss of low end power. Ever since the Taitec exhaust recieved the optional silencers, I've thought about buying the exhaust just for the benefit of the silencers. A dyno would be very helpful.
 
Backpressure is never good. What people mean is that if your piping is too "open", you can lose exhaust-gas velocity, especially in the lower RPMs. This additional backpressure is what causes the loss in low end power.

I just got my new Taitec and will be replacing my Comptech this weekend. If anyone wants a quiet exhaust, buy my Comptech. :) I'm getting a new daily driver in a couple of weeks so I'm not so concerned about my NSX exhaust getting louder.

I'm not sure I understand the above statement. What does exhaust-gas velocity loss do to affect low end power? I know for certain that I must keep the NSX at higher revs to maintain a steady launch through first gear. But once I hit WOT there seems to be a substantial gain in HP. If back pressure is never good, then why do different setups have butterfly valves specificly to maintain back pressure under low revs?
 
What ever happened to those installed pics?

silencers definitely impact performance...while you may not at first feel a loss because you probably gained some midrange torque due to exhaust velocity being up...you really lost out on the top end where it all gets backed up. I had a 2.5" system on my prelude and when I put the silencer on I could feel it run out of breath at 6000rpms onward, when my open exhaust ran to 7800.

Sorry about the lighting. It was morning and thought there was enough light. The silencers can be seen easily from standing behind the X or from another car if that is what you are concerned with.
