Anyone in the Northeast thinking of taking your NSX on the train to Orlando?
I looked up Amtrack autotrain today, the vehicle cost $140 to transport. I don't believe the height requirement is a concern for us. There is a 4 inch minimum ground clearance which can be a problem for some of us.

I am seriously considering this as a way to get both cars to Orlando:D

I like to do this but I dont know if the height requirement will work.

Don't you need to be with the car? if so this takes more time away from having fun  If you can afford it imo it is still better to ship the cars and fly to the venue. If you don't mind driving to DC and have the lead time to travel on the train, then it might be a fun experience.

Id still like to do this but im worried all drive all the way down there and my car wont make it.

Is someone from the northeast arranging shipping down there?

In the past our senior member has taken the time to arrange an intercity truck,I have not heard anything yet for this year.I'm sure Bap racing will post something in the near future:wink:

What is the Auto Train?

The Auto Train is Amtrak's train service for people who want to take their vehicle with them. To travel on Auto Train, you must travel with a vehicle, and your vehicle must meet certain requirements (see below).

The Auto Train travels nonstop between Lorton, Virginia (near Washington, DC) and Sanford, Florida (near Orlando, Florida). The Auto Train is the only route in the Amtrak system that transports vehicles.

Parties traveling on the Auto Train route must reserve space for a vehicle and check in their vehicle prior to travel.

Yes, as noted above.

Note that you would need to drive to suburban DC to do so; the train is non-stop, so it does not stop in NC en route. (I don't know if that's what you were thinking of; I apologize if you already knew this.)

Thanks Ken, I did not realize it was non stop. That pretty much takes it off the table for me:(

I was thinking of perhaps a pre-NSXPO gathering at The Dragon. That way we'll be at Deal's Gap mid-week when it's not crowded, spend a couple of days there then head on down to Sebring which is about an 8 - 10 hour drive.

I sure as well wouldn't mind the drive from South Florida up to The Dragon then back down to Sebring. Any other South Florida NSX'ers interested?

By the way my car is lowered about 1" from stock and recently did an Auto Train trip.

The train trip is 16 hours and 30 min.It is an overnight ride, 4PM - 8:30 AM.Meals included.

There is a group discount.

Discounts

Groups may be eligible to receive discounts up to as much as 20% off for each 20 paying passengers. Amtrak's 15% senior citizen and half-fare children's discounts may be applied to eligible members of the group. These discounts are not valid on all trains. Further restrictions may apply.

It sure beats driving for 15 hrs or however long it takes to get down there. 4" clearance huh...

From Columbus it is a 6.5 hr drive to DC, but a 16.5 hr drive to Orlando. But I'm not sure if I would want to drive my car into DC. Is the cost for car and individual a total of $140, or does that include car transport only?

That is correct. Slots are filling up fast and we might need to get a second truck. Send Pete an email to let him know if you are interested.

The $140 is a one way ticket for the car, you will have to buy a passenger ticket. The cheapest is $106 for one way. Round trip is cheaper at $85/each way.But for some reason the round trip ticket for the car is more expensive at $322. The total round trip either you buy 2 one tickets or one round trip ticket is around $495.
I emailed Amtrak and they gave me a contact email and phone # for group discount.
If there is enough interest out there, I will then contact Amtrack and get a group rate for us. Their site claims up to 20% discount.

Just imagine a train full of NSXs being loaded and unload at the train stations. What a sight.

Guidelines Regarding Dimensions and Clearance

Automobiles
Automobiles may not exceed 65 inches in height and must have at least 4 inches of ground clearance. We accept automobiles with empty, factory-installed ski or luggage racks, but only if the total height of the vehicle and rack does not exceed the 65-inch allowance.

The Autotrain train station is in Lorton, Virginia, about 20 miles southwest of the Capitol and about 8 miles outside the Beltway. (The one in Florida is in Sanford, about 25 miles north of Orlando.)

I just got the phone with Karen from Amtrak (Group rate coordinator) and decide to get a group rate for NSXPO round trip.
The rate per person including a seat with share room (2 person/room) plus car round trip is $635.00
-The trip start from Lorton - Virginia on October 7 (Saturday) at 4pm, but
we will be at the station around 1:30pm.
We will arrive at Sanford - Florida on October 8 at 8:30 am.

-The trip back from Sanford - Florida start on October 16 (Monday) at 4pm,
and we will arrive at Lorton - Virginia on October 17 at 8:30 am.

If you interested to join the Auto Train group rate for NSXPO please sign up at group rate auto train.

To my knowledge none of the NE folks took the auto train.

I will be spending a few weeks in FL this coming summer. I was thinking taking the auto train with my minivan. I will let you know my experience.

Did anyone use this? Good? Bad?

Your got put your NSX on a autotrain? I dont even park mine outside:redface: It will melt:biggrin:

Yeah thinking about Xmas plans - going to NC and wouldn't mind saving the mileage a little 1 way. Drive back through the Mtns and visit friends in ATL.
I really should think about tires though - got F1 GSD3s - think those would be unsafe on 30 degree cold roads? Or just "take it easy"?

Christmas in NYC is simply unreal! As far as the tires go, driving high performance tires in the cold can be a challenge. Let them warm up first and just ignore the bumpy first couple of minutes.

I took my NSX with Autotrain last month for NSXPO and everything went well.
It's start 4pm and arrive 8:30am.
The ticket included dinner and breakfast plus bed (depending what type of ticket you get).
It was fun, specially after dinner you can sit on the lounge car to see the movie.
I mwill do it again for Xmas.
